Example: I think my 1999 Acura cl is better than both cars and heres why -better gas mileage -more comfortable, spacious -more reliable (id never be tempted to mod it = stays reliable) -quieter, smoother -more trunk room -has radio controls on the steering wheel! |

^ that. I do prefer the MR2's layout, but the S2000 has a really cool engine. Neither is better, they're simply different.

It's not
![]() Having driven/been around both: Advantage MR2 Turbo: -Outward visibility (with top up on the S2K) -Cargo capacity -Rarity (anymore) -Turbo setup makes it easier to add significant, reliable power (if done properly) -No nit-picking about a soft-top at some racetracks -More interior room -Easier (IMO) to drive (less shifting with usable torque). Advantage S2K: -Chassis rigidity -Steering feel -better handling (stock vs. stock) -far FAR easier to work on -Class competitive for SCCA autocross (if you're into that type of thing) -you can drop the top all the way if you're into that type of thing. Neutral: -Both have solid aftermarket support -Both handle VERY well with light modification -Both look alright -Both have rather comfortable seats if you're not fat (just being honest). I've had my MR2 Turbo on a track with a bunch of S2Ks. I was running race tires and could just barely reel in an S2K on aggressive street tires. I think the S2K is probably dynamically superior to the MR2 stock-for-stock in absolute terms, but I'd say the MR2 is actually more day-to-day usable. |

Even though I don't like ragtops, I know that the S2000 is most likely my vehicle of choice once Toyota decides to stop selling SW20 parts. There's really nothing else closer other than an unrelaible Elise/Exige or a Cayman S.

Even my earlier post on "male hairdresser' was meant to elicit a few homophobic responses, it would be my choice also. But it has to be just right.. no black, red or 'pimped out'. I would trade my 2 for this one in a second: ![]() |

There is no comparison. The S2K is a world different than the MR2 (better in my opinion). If you compare the cars, stock for stock, the S2K is quicker, revs higher, turns better, and will drive circles around an MR2 on a track. They have similar handling characteristics (throttle lift over steer) and both are pretty good sports cars. Great, now you made me miss my s2000 ![]() |

If it weren't for those retardedly hideous gauges, most notably the tach, I'd have one.

I'm shocked. The MR2 for me is something special that the s2k wouldn't come close to. I think even given handeling the MR2 being a cheap mid engine and having turbo ability makes it once of the best sports cars on the used market.
Regardless of a better chassis, I find the s2k very bland and I hate ragtops. Idk, they just have always struck me as boring. Kind of like the 350z, there not ugly, they just don't do anything for me when I see them. I would think with some choice suspension upgrades a MR2 could hold it's own with s2k's. |

^ I don't think anyone is disputing what you're writing, I agree with every single word, all of it. We're not traitors! So don't be shocked.
But you have to admit to yourself, our beloved SW20s are getting old, very old, super old. Parts, though still available, are always in a "Can we get them or not?" state of flux and we're subjected to parts scares where bastard vendors create a false scarcity to gouge us. Even some auto-technician friends of mine are just so-so about working on these cars, the engines are ancient and so is the technology. They joke that they want me to buy a newer car so that they can have fun working on the new technology and the gee-whiz attributes of 20 years of improved standards & innovation. The S2000 has it, especially the AP2 model post 2004. And my SW20 looks brand new & runs like new, perfect shape. But that still doesn't stop me from knowing that one day I gotta let go, possibly sooner than I expect even after 10 years of owning one. I'm choked thinking about it... It's tough for me to admit, but the S2000 is a great replacement for the SW20, very worthy of that esteemed spot. Drive one and cozy up to it for a few days and you'll agree with me, there's creature comfort and a racing background too. Lots of superchargers and bolt-on mods for the cheap make it a fun car to mod as well. I don't like ragtops any more than most haters of that style, but whatchagonna do? (except pop for a Spoon hardtop when the funds become available )And it's mid-engine too (the engine is 100% mounted behind the front axle, so technically it qualifies). ![]() |

I promise that I won't move to that platform. I will go to a lotus 100% for a move into a different mid engine. With prices being in the low 20k range now for used elise, and dipping into 20k-ish range for exige, I would opt for that. Reliability has never been something I have heard of with them, however I'm not a lotus know it all.
I just don't think the S2k would give me nearly as much wow. I'd also go out on a limb and say the S2k would get eaten alive by a lotus on a track. Those cars are potent beasts. So I'll save up my loose change and when I decide to i'll ADD a lotus to the stable, but i don't see myself letting go of the MR2 anytime soon. |

^ Drive the s2000. The gearbox is purely orgasmic. The clutch is amazing. The steering (electric assist, not hydraulic like most cars), the brakes, and throttle response are simply to die for.
RePete suggested the engine in the AP2 was better. That seems to be a point of contention among s2000 owners. I personally prefer the extra 1000RPM the AP1 engine has to offer, even if it comes up 20ft.lb short in the torque game. We often dragged our cars (at the track of course) and switching between AP1 and AP2 models was surely noticeable, but until 2006 (i'm pretty sure) when they switched to "drive by wire throttle" there is nothing different between the engines except a longer piston throw (ap2) that accounted for the loss of 1000RPM and the increase in torque. I'm talking up the S2000, sure... but at the end of the day... remember, I sold it. And now, i have an MR2 ![]() |
