UPS can ship an 80lb shower door with just a couple pieces of reinforced cardboard on each end to prevent damage.

You would be amazed at the huge random things they do everyday in their small brown trucks. You should look into the sheets of 4'x8' insulation you can buy at the hardware store, add some reinforcement on end and you've got some pretty good protection. Heck if you ask really nice they may even band it all up for you.

Packaging sciences. I really shouldn't have laughed at that major.

One of the officers that works for my dad (ISCM, Navy) had a degree in packaging sciences.

We laughed at him too.

If I may jump in, I work for fedex and we ship packages bigger than that all the time, so all u need is to wrap it in card board and tape it really well and it will be fine.

If you work for FedEx can you do me a favor and have them reimburse me for the $12500 worth of shipments that they managed to damage, misplace, and lose during 2008 that they still haven't reimbursed me for?

I've tried every way I can think of to package them and they still ended up banged up or totally destroyed upon arrival. That is if FedEx managed to even get it there in the first place. The only way I can think of to get them there safely is to build a crate. Doable? Yes. Make sense financially? No.
