the 5vz has the a/c sitting on the opposite side of the engine block compared to the transversal 3vz and mzs. which means its sitting in the path of the axles

well that will do it! i thought the 3s and other fwd v6 s were on the fire wall side and 5vz was on trunk side, is that incorrect?

well, after reading up and doing a lot of research, I've finally decided to go for the 5VZ, at just shy of £6,000 inc shipping, The engine will be supplied fully rebuilt with a list of upgrades as long as my arm, pushing between a guaranteed 600-700 RW bhp, (inc a Rotex SC)
I have Paul Woods based in County Durham (NEast UK) to carry out the work, Engine to be built and supplied by Sea2Sky in the USA, at this price, Pauls labour is not covered. The car will be going in for the work in 5-6 months. Should be a bit of a beast. My father works as a paint designer, doesnt sound exciting, but he only works with flip paints, chromes, metaflake and temperature reactive paints. So he is going to be designing / providing me with a custom colour, hopefully find a genuine TRD kit to finish it of - so if anyone knows of where I can get one - let me know ![]() Anyways - as to the debate, if you want driveability, with a little bit of a conservative drive left - go for the 3VZ - if you just want something brutal for the drag strip and a few weekend drives, go for the 5VZ, either way, both are excellent setups in the MR2 and neither should be knocked. |

I agree 5VZ's are so hardy. You can't kill them. I have run mine like a beast since last year. Bad AFR's, big air bubbles in my cooling system, overheated so badly. None of it has hurt it yet. That , my friends, is a tough motor!

Sorry, Paul told me that sea2sky was in the USA!!! guess it was easier than saying Canada. (somehow or other)
anyway, fetting funds together to pay up front, that way I can have an allowance for any unforseen costs. It needs to be done. hopefully sooner rather than later, PS these forums are amzing - so much help and advice - Thanks guys ![]() |

heh its alright man i took no offense to it
Building these motors can be tough to estimate costs due to the fact there can be different problems that vary motor to motor. For example some engines that i get in are perfect and have always been run with synthetic, while others are treated like crud and i need to have things like the valve guides replaced which ups the cost. The motor i sourced for you however is in very good shape, i came across this one not to long ago and picked it up as a spare core. |

hey after reading this I think that I will be doing a 3vz in my swap this spring...I'm not trying to make huge power but I do want my 2 to run as fast as it looks...All though the 1mz is sounding like a good way to go also....great more research....

Going to have to vote 3VZ on this one, just because the availability in Norway is lackluster of both engines, but at least i know where i can get a 3VZ, if they still have it.

With my 5vz running pig rich with no tune at all, I'm getting about 16mpg. That is a combo highway and city mileage. AND it is with me DRIVING the car, not poking along. I expect to get to around 30, if I tune for mileage.
