Great chart, think you could find one for the S-51, E-153 MR2 turbo and E-153 camry or solara tranny? I think those are all the popular choices for trannys to mate with V6s.

Also, did you calculate out the chart yourself or find it off a site?

I wouldn't have the patience to calculate the chart by myself I got the chart from http://www.f-body.org/gears and went to the trouble to make it easily visible as a jpg.

I do intend to do the other tranny's that are commonly used in v6 swaps.

That's a great tool, Dave! Would be one hell of a lot easier to make jpg's of

I'm an idiot. I read my source wrong and grabbed the wrong numbers; that's for a '85 - '89 Mk I.

I will update it with the right numbers and a graph from the tool that DaveMush referred me to.

Also, the S51 chart is the same as the S54. The 1-2 upshift on the S51 should drop the engine to 3500rpm if the redline is 6500.

Here's the S51 on 245/45/17s with a redline of 6300:

They're the same how? I have the same ratios in my graph as you put in yours but different minimum and maximum rev and stock tire size ...

EDIT: I figured it out. I have the redline set too high.

Love this post. The top speed thing is cool, but what about wind resistance?

All this takes into consideration is gearing. When the car reaches the top speed of any given gear that's as fast you can go without over-revving the engine (going past red-line). It's called "gear limited top speed".

Just because the gearing makes a particular speed possible doesn't mean the engine has enough poop to push the car that fast without a stupidly long straight/flat run.

And that's where drag-limited top speed comes into play. Drag limited essentially means torque-limited because there isn't sufficient power to reach a higher speed.

Tire/wheel size will also change the gear limits, but the cost is reduced torque through longer gearing.
As you can see in my chart, 245/45/17s are required on the S51 if you want to reach 60mph in 2nd gear without shifting to 3rd and losing time in the 0-60mph run.
