Since my OBX down/B-pipe fits so horribly ... I've been thinking now's the time to improve upon it. Let me run this past you guys:
I'm thinking cut it off at the flanges of the b-pipe (the collectors are 2.25") ... basically to salvage the flanges -> going to a 2.25" X pipe under the crossmember -> merge with a Y-pipe after the X-pipe -> going to my Apexi GT catback (what's left of it). The front/rear banks won't be equal length though to the X-pipe, will that really make a HUGE difference for a stock 1MZ though? I'll draw it out later tonight. I like the headers themselves, they're much smaller and clear the shift cables nicely. The rest is craaaaapola... I would not reccomend anyone buy these. I'd be so pissed if I was a Solara/Camry owner trying to bolt these on over a weekend. It's just not possible. |

I think this is probably the nicest 4 cyl exhaust I've ever heard:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2R87wr60o0U It sounds almost like a ducatti ![]() That's the 2bular ultra single tip for the 111R elise/exige... That car is decatted as well. For those who don't know, engine is the 2zz. I wonder how something of similar design would sound on a built rev monster of a 3vz. That's pretty similar to the sound I want for my 2. It should sound even more aggressive and solid with the extra 2 cyl our engines have ![]() Now I wonder if Jim would actually fab some exhausts for us if we were to propose a group buy, or if the existing exhaust could even be modified to fit while keeping a similar note. Edit: This one's nice too, the arqray single and straight pipes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dckVgj6-hio |

i'm leaning more towards the low grumble of the flowmaster. I can't stand high pitch exhaust notes, it just irritates the heck out of me. I like my exhaust about as quiet as an intake.
I was thinking of a flowmaster 50 suv + 6" round magnaflow pre-muffler. Any opinions on this? |

Honestly, sticking with MR2 turbo cat-backs makes more sense. They bolt right up to the stock brackets and flow enough for your average V6.
You have more to gain from modifying the actual exhaust (and not some overpriced shiny muffler), anyway Stock VZ/MZ manifolds suck! As for sound, you're not going to get a 6-cyl to sound like a 4-banger. Sound has more to do with the engine (# of exhaust pulses) than it does the muffler. Header'd 1MZs and 3VZs seem to sound a lot like 3.5L Nissan V6s and NSXs. That is, to say, the only other cars on the road that commonly have V6s with opened up exhausts ![]() |

The car in those videos has straight cut gears... You can hardly even hear the exhaust over the screaming transmission. -_-

Everyone's got their own taste. I used to like the F1 sound but everyone seem to try to replicate it with a loud raspy exhaust. I built my Celica to NOT be like everyone.
My sound preference for low rumble is on a daily driver, as quiet as possible with a hint of sound. As far away to anything that says "Hey look at meeeee, I'm like Fast n' Furious yo!!" I love the sound of high revs on a real race car on the track but on the street arrg, it's annoying !!! One day, I'm going to take the sledgehammer to that f-king civic that keeps farting at full throttle down my street at 3AM. I'm going to shove that exhaust of his right up his- .... I think I made my point ![]() There is a HUGE difference in sound between a small block V8 and a ricer with a fart can, not comparable whatsoever. |

^^^ I've loved all the HKS mufflers I've ever owned (5SFE, 4AGE and now the 1MZ).. they're quiet, yet slightly rumbly at around-town RPM, but if you hammer on it, you get killer sound under heavy load and at higher rpm. There's just something about the way they tune their muffler cans..
I'm not normally a fan of anything "JDM," but they make really nice mufflers, so what can I say? ![]() |

The forward gears in modern automotive transmissions are of the helical-cut variety. That is to say, the teeth that are cut into the gear are angled in a curved manner, as opposed to a straight cut gear, in which the teeth are cut perpendicular to the gear's surface.
Helical cut gears reduce noise. Straight cut gears provide the strongest interlock and most durability, which is why many race cars use them. The noise is unbearable enough in a race car, nevermind on the street in a daily-driven vehicle. ![]() Your reverse gear is straight-cut, though.. so just consider how loud and whiny it is at ~800rpm when you're backing up.. and multiply that noise by 8-fold to imagine it at redline... |

straight cut its just regular gears, the simpliest of gear designs.
these are helical gears which is in most trannys ![]() the straight cut gears are just straight. i dont know why they are used in racing though... but they sound hella cool. |

And and again, race cars use them for strength and reliability.. the long-term hearing health of the driver isn't a concern in pro racing, haha. =/ |

Ok, so exactly what the name implies. I kinda though that's what it meant. Right now, I have an 80% chance my trany is messed up.
http://www.mr2board.com/forums/turbo...need-help.html Hmmm.....I might go with straight cut gears then. I took out my stero system the previous own had in there an found out the interior is crammed with dynomat, the really thick tarry stuff. That would explain why I could hardly hear my exhaust, turbo, or bov. I could only hear it wot. Maybe it won't be ear deafing with the dyno mat. Also, stronger gears would mean less trany problems in the future. I'm leaning towards the straight cut gears. It wouldn't be a daily driver, since I have a DD alreadly. ![]() |

dont think any manufacturer in the past 15 years made straightcut tranny gears for any of their cars except the racing ones.
