V6 peeps...Lets talk Exhausts
So throw your ideas in...what kind of exhasut work are you going to do for your setup (or in node case "setups")
I am talking about muffler setups...i know some will jsut run open DP with turbo or hopen header with n/a..... ![]()

I'm probably going to connect the dp to where my current turbo bpipe meets my aftermarket exhaust. I'll put a flex section in there someplace so I don't strain the welds. I haven't really gotten far enough yet to know whether this idea will work or not.

Initially, I'm planning to hack up and rework the OE y-pipe into something with a flex that will bend around to connect the stock MR2 muffler flange. Eventually I will probably replace that set-up with proper headers. My main goal is to eliminate the OE Y-pipe's restricting bends & baffels.
For a muffler I'm planning to start with an OE turbo unit, but I'd really like to find a good dual exit (to keep the OE look) muffler that's a bit lighter and perhaps less restricitive. I don't know enough about the OE muffler yet to know how much of a change that will make, though. Once I have the car on the dyno I'll need to test disconnecting the muffler and see what happens. My thought in using the OE muffler connection point is that it keeps some options open for access to main-stream MR2 aftermarket developments. |

Interesting - I hadn't looked into sourcing other posibilities outside of browsing a few aftermarket muffler builders. I didn't see anything I liked so I just settled on the OE turbo muffler for now.

yea i was thinking about the 3.5L muffler too.
Just gotta find them small enough so you can have enough room to bend pipes into it. |

the original plan for my car was no mufflers just 1 or 2 resonantors with dual tips. I'll have to see how it's going to sound and how much room there is for mufflers. I'm looking for a supercar type of sound. smooth and high pitched vs the muscle car rumbling. I just need the rpm cause 5500 sucks on the highway

well due to the nature of this engine you will get a bit of a rumble but with the help of some creative exhaust setups yuo can make it sound good.
But nobody has heard these engines over 5500rpm yet tho I cant wait to hear mine N/A at that rpm....oh my |

I have Brad's headers, no cats, a Turbo muffler.
The sound is a bit raspy, but MANY people have said that it sounds great. At low RPM's and light load, it sounds more like a muscle car, but once it gets past about 3000 RPM, things change a lot. It is fairly loud, but I've never been pulled over for it, perhaps because it's not screaming loud unless the throttle is wide open. People think that the stock muffler is so restrictive. They need to listen to my car so that they can realize just how little that thing is actually doing. I've had one "older" guy (an airline captain that owns a Lotus) tell me that it sounds like a Ferrari. Well, my license plate does read "JAP 4RE". ![]() |

Im with TRDNY on this one. Im about to go pickup the resonators for his exhaust system from Total Performance. Im using 2 resonators in series. In conjunction with the turbo it sould sound nice and smooth. I used twin 2.5" resonators on my last turbo project and it sounded very clean. It was loud only under heavy throttle.
For an NA setup though, the stock MR2 turbo exhaust is about as loud as I would want to hear. I put the turbo muffler on a 5S and it was a little annoying on the highway. I will say that mitch (err V6'er) is right, his car sounds quite good at high revs. |

N/A MR2's are annoyingly loud inside the car compared to Turbo MR2's. They also drone at about 70 MPH, something a Turbo doesn't do.
Put the Turbo muffler on an N/A and all you do is worsen the problem. Unless of course you LIKE it that way. ![]() |

^ Indeed. And you recently also stated that a resonator will kill a lot of the raspy sound. There's simply no room on my car for such luxury.
