S51TRANNY HERE
My s51 tranny came in. i'm just debating wether or not to install in now or wait a bit and get an obx lsd and install. Has anybody had any experience with the obx lsd. Any suggestions, do i need an lsd now or should i wait. I'm going turbo soon so i'm debating wether i should go turbo first or lsd.

the tranny is out of a 98 camry with 89k miles on it. i took it apart and it looks really clean the gears and synchros look to be in great shape. guess it's a good thing i didn't buy another s54.

If the car is a street car, I'd make sure to only get a 1 way LSD, and probably a better brand than OBX. Honestly I don't even think a stockish V6 needs a LSD at all.
How do you plan on getting the S-51 to work? Swapping the center section and flipping the shifter selector? |

yeah i'm going to be swapping the center section over. the engine will not be stockish much longer. As stated in the build thread it'll be turbo this winter and most likely internals so i can up the boost. But before getting ahead of myself i would need to set up a proper suspension and decent wheel setup.

i'd like to get a v6 solara/turbo hybrid but funds aren't there yet. I went for the s51 because it was between that or rebuild my grinding s54. I am getting really sick of the high highway rpms, and grinding second. So i'll just take it easy until i can do a real tranny swap. unless i can find a cheap e153 and hubs and axles, i'll be sticking with the s51. The upgrade list seems to grow every few days.

Randy beat the snot out of his s51/s54 hybrid for a season of SoloII and ProSolo before he broke the tranny (lost teeth off the ring gear, IIRC). That was with a S/C'd 1mz and huge race tires in back. It's only 1 data point, of course...
If you're not a drag racer you should be ok, even with a turbo setup. |

What folks figured out to do was pull the bolts that come with the OBX, buy some high quality bolts to replace them, screw them in, drop in the diff, and off you go. There are quite a few people who have done this and then run the OBX diff's for 15K+ miles with no issues and improved performance. I'm not saying "go buy one" I'm just highlighting that based on other experiences that there is a way to make these work. As to whether or not they are a good match for the MR2 (I'm clearly still learning) I have no idea. Subaru guys have found them to be a nice option if you're on a budget. |

s51
i just picked up a 96 awd impreza for the winter and the mr2 is goin down for some work. i decided not to install the obx limited slip yet. not because i've heard all bad stuff about it, but because i might just go with and e-box later on. i used to own a gen 7 celica gt-s (got rid of it and bought my mr2) and i read of enough people using the obx lsd. some bad reviews but enough good reviews. i also heard from a very reliable source that trd subcontracts a lot of their parts to a smaller company, and i would not be too surprised if they use obx. i know their older stuff was on point, but as of late they seem to be kinda weak sauce. this is not a bash trd or boost obx thread, and i can't talk much about obx except for what i've read. i just decided not to buy an lsd until i go turbo, and decide wether or not to buy an e-box, which i think is the way i'm going. now another question is, do i go with gen three rx7 wheels or rota p45r. i can get the rx7 wheels for 450 with brand new tires and i know they wheigh less than the rotas but hey are not staggered. i'm going for more performance than looks. so wadda u guys think

s51 in
i took my car into the shop last week and finally installed the s51. i decided to wait on the lsd until later on. i did manage to install the apexi safc. i know it does not do much on n/a cars i just want to learn how to tune with it so i don't run any major risks once i boost it. The next step is to install the pick up and install a uego wide band, so that i can tune properly. it felt so good to be able to shift into second without any grinding and to be able to drive on the highway at a decent rpm level.
