Were the Spyders sold brand new with some sort of a vinyl cover or boot that whould cover the top when folded down.? If not, does anyone know if there are any after market ones available.?

No OEM products, in the USA anyway. Japanparts did sell some that covered the ends, but the couple of people I know that have them almost never use them do to the trouble to put on/take off. Now if you keep your top down for extended times YMMV.

My Google Map

The top was designed to fold down in a way that it makes its own cover (vs. the older miata's method) so it's not likely that many will make such a thing. The end pieces mentioned just give it a finished look. I wanted a set until I read lbridges post - sounds like something I would do.

There is a hard cover however I recall seeing that sat atop that area, one style is like on this yellow one from Carson's site:

I had seen a few variations of this from a few years ago but dunno about sourcing.

Here's the Japanparts info for the product I was writing about, it's just two vinyl end covers (pic included).

Item No.: 014-103-017
Price: JP ¥20,800.00 US $214.71
Delivery time by air: 10-15 days

I don't think the hard covers (pic from supunna picta) are in production anymore, but the Carson's site says, "** Optional Rear wing, hood, tonneu cover and tail cover are available **", so maybe they are. One would have to call Carson's (and ask for Steve IIRC). Or one could always e-mail Graham Ware (of Japanparts) and ask. If he can't find it then I think it would require someone to physically go there and do some searching.
