If keeping an OEM head unit is important to you I would suggest looking at some Scion replacements as they are better sounding to begin with, might have pre-amp outs, way less expensive than an after market unit and are a direct plug-n-play into the Spyder. Then go for amps and speakers.
Pulling out the OEM unit is very easy but you do have to remove a few of the trim pieces on the dash first (the plastic pillars on the left and right, the heater knobs and the surrounding trim, cup holder and ashtray). I will look in the BGB and post the instructions for you when I get home of someone else doesn't post up. |

There are a couple of issues you will have to work through.
1) The OEM unit comes out easily, supunna picta described the basics. An aftermarket unit will bolt right in, but unless you get a double-DIN unit you will need to fill the bottom end. The easiest way is to get a standard, universal style pocket. Most made specific for the Spyder end up only giving you a 1/4DIN slot & waste space. Then you need something to fill the sides as Toyota did not use standatd DIN width. There are a couple of pieces made for a Celica, but I'm on the road and can't remember for sure which years used them - probably mid-90s. 2) You can either cut wires, or look for a wiring kit, it's a pretty much atndard wiring set up - as mentioned above the Scion is plug & play, so a harness to fit them.... IIRC there's someone on EBAY selling MR2 Spyder add-on harnesses. The add-on harness will make the wire color translation for you to standard aftermarket colors. |
