Electrical Problems, PLEASE HELP!
I just purchased an 01' Spyder. It has 71xxx miles on it.
I test drove it during the day with no problems. I decided to buy it. After putting 20 miles on the car I get in. I had a real hard time trying to get the ignition to turn. There must be a trick I don't know about yet, it took nearly 10 minutes to turn it! Turn car on. No dash lights at all. I can't see the entire instrument panel. So I drive for a bit, then a porsche pulls up behind me and starts flashing his high beams and then turns on his signal. I pull over and he says your tail lights are out. I'm thinking at this point I got ripped off. Next I goto turn my high beams on. No dice. I can flash the beams but they won't stay on in the on position. I get home and goto drive to my girlfriends house. Check engine light turns on. I took it back to the dealership and their telling me theres nothing wrong with it. After bitching at them for about 20 minutes they call me right back and tell me they replaced the battery terminal. He told me he was able to turn off the check engine light. I don't think they replaced the battery terminal because within a few minutes of telling me nothing was wrong, they called back and had magically replaced the terminal. What the heck do you think could be causing all these problems, lights not working, as well as the check engine light. I haven't signed the formal loan papers so I'm not sure if theres any way I can give them back this car, but I'm worried I'm going to have serious problems with this car if its this bad 40 miles off the lot. Any quick responses would be so so greatly appreciated. This is my first nice car, I'm not even happy anymore. -Ryan |

Well sometimes you have to turn the wheel to the right or left while turning the ignition key for it to turn. The high beams maybe ur trying to turn them on the wrong way. Like american cars , most american cars , you pull back to turn the high beams on. Foreign car you pull back and all it does is flash teh high beams. YOu got to push the switch forward to turn the high beams on. Idk about a check engine light from the battery being low but I do know it will casue VERY weird problems. Like my car when the battery was prety much dead and IWent ot crank it the windsheild wipers would turn on. I was like wtf lol. But it was from a bad battery. So you never know

Does this car come with a limited warranty? If not, don't buy the car. Did the low beam headlights work? The tail lights not working could be a burned out fuse. Is this a Toyota dealership? If not, and if you really want to buy this car, get it to a T dealership asap and have them check it out.

You can give the car back. They will fight to keep you in it, but if you want out, you can get out of it. The "no cooling off period" can be overruled if you are returning it for mechanical defects. Just tell them that you are returning it because of constant mechanical problems.

SO. Blonde moment of the week. Never had daytime running lights before. My dumbass forgot to turn the headlights on. Theres the light problem. The check engine light is still an issue though. They said a piston misfire and the o2 sensor triggered the check engine light. They replaced the battery terminal, so far thats it. On monday their going to look into the o2 sensor issue more. On Tuesday I'm bringing it to my mechanic to have him look at everything and run some diagnostics. The sales rep said he'd speak to his boss about returning the car and if it is possible. However, if nothing is wrong with the car and/or they fix the problems under warranty I'll keep it. The only thing I don't like is they didn't wash the car before they sold it to me and I thought it was flawless, after they washed it there were a bunch of visible scratches on the hood and some on the side of the car. Oh well, I'll wax it up and see what I can do about getting it re-painted.

Take the car to Shucks and have them put the code reader on it, then post up what code is being thrown (causing the check engine light).
Is the car running a stock exhaust system? mr2gq is right about the ignition and wheel. If the wheel lock is engaged when you park the car, you need to forcibly turn the wheel a little further one way or the other while switching the key over to start - this is common in most cars. Nice move with the lights - the 01's DDLs (daytime driving lights) are pretty bright.oh, if they disconnect the battery long enough it will reset the computer and shut off the check engine light, but if there is a problem, the CEL will just come back on until the problem is addressed. It has some kind of intake on it. Unfortunately I have no idea what kind as I only had the car for a little bit. They replaced the MAF before they sold the car. I'm gonna get the codes on Monday or Tuesday and I'm going to work from there. I mean without the code though, cylinder misfire sounds pretty bad to me?

I doubt it's a cylinder misfire - probably related to the CAI I bet. I seem to recall 2 things about intakes. 1 is that if you have an oil type, then oil can get on the sensor and throw a cel, the other is improper tube diameter causes the cel at the sensor. Lets see what those codes are and then figure it out.

They said there was a hole in my exhaust pipe and they sent it out for repair and their still waiting for that to return for another diagnosis. They said after the post converter in the lower flange the 2 pipes that go into that have holes. They were seeing oxygen one second and fuel the next and that would cause both codes. The only other cause that he said would be the MAF which is brand new. Any insight would be appreciated.

Yep, those are correct codes and descriptions according to my book. And I do recall reading about exhaust system leaks throwing them as well in Bank 2. Fixing the leaks should cure the problem with an OEM exhaust system.
If you go after market instead of OEM, then we'll show you how to get around all the other O2 codes you'll get ![]() Nothing serious other than the repair bill. Hope you can just enjoy the car after this - they're usually pretty trouble free. |
