Spyders....Don't seem to be accepted.?
Just a moment of curiosity. Maybe it's just me, but it sure seems that the Spyder it is a bit out casted amongst the Mr2 world. Is it so?

I agree with your statement. The spyder is constantly ragged on this forum for being a girly car. I think however, that the spyder possesses the same qualities of the other mr2s, with the exception of the convertible top and forced induction. I believe that a good looking spyder is in the same ranks as the others less power than the sw20 but better handling and less weight.
oddly enough this one gets alot of attention.Last edited by mr2silvertop; 08-25-2008 at 08:07 PM.. |

People are still making threads about this?
All three MR2s tend to appeal to three different types of people. That's how it always has been and how it always will be. There will also always be a group of people who like all of them, or just two of them. Really, there's no issue unless you want to make it one ![]() |

Initially I didn't like either the MKI or the MKIII. But they've grown on me over time. For the most part though, I just don't like convertibles. I don't really like the MKII spyder conversion either. Closest I'll get to a convertible is a T-Top or a full Targa Top like on the Supra. I just prefer to have a bit of structure behind my head. Otherwise MKIII's are pretty nice.

What's that supposed to mean.?
![]() Oddly enough, I'm not a fan of convertibles...at all. But, this time last year I choose to give up my 2003 v10 modified Ford F250...sucked gaaaaass. Broke my heart to get rid of it. But, along came a Spyder and I sat inside'er..... Fell in love with the damn thing. It was bone stock...almost $5000 later and a year, I still love it. And I have plenty of other plans for it. I guess the reason I started this thread is because of things I have read while reading other threads...not just to me that is. It's an impression I get. And I wonder why the gen2 folks seem to have the most to say about them. I'm not trying to make a stink about it.....just wondering why.? Just plain curiosity. ![]() |

I used to say that the Spyder was the red-headed stepchild of the MR2 community when I bought my 01 which is still partially true on certain forums but I'm not seeing the same levels of anti-2 that I used to get since it's been around long enough now to prove itself. |

ur an ass raptor. The guy is starting a thread. Although he mistakenly used that word, we all knew what he meant. I understand that u may feel as if u r some sort of english professor, or u may even feel that u need to assert your superiority in some way.
By the way, the SW20 Spyder is not a modification. It was produced, in Japan only, from 1996-1999. The car was met with such success that Toyota decided to make the third generation a convertible roadster. The MR2 never ceased production in Japan from 1984 through 2007. In the U.S. however, the MR2 ran; AW11 1985-1989, SW20 1991-1995, and the ZZW30 2001-2005. Last edited by mr2silvertop; 08-25-2008 at 08:19 PM.. |

I wouldn't say it is an outcast. The spyder section of the forum gets alot less traffic but I believe that is because it is a newer car and therefore doesn't attract the attention of the generation more interested in "modding" their cars, it also needs less repair since most of them have warranties anyway.
As mentioned already I believe that each gen of mr2 attracts different people. Also each car has its own respective qualities. (being a mk1 owner I can only really speak from experience on this car, the rest is off of knowledge gained through reading, please correct me if I am wrong) The aw11 is not as light as the spyder but offers a tiny jet fighter like driving experience. It also offers 2 different engine options over the years and offers the choice of hard top, sun roof, and ttop. These cars are usually very easy to find on local scrap lots and therefore easy to get quick repair parts for until the proper part can be obtained. The sw20 is heavier and longer then the aw11 and the spyder but offers a decent stock powered turbo engine, it also features a body design that suits the vast majority of car buyers. this car has plenty of body mod support (more then the zzw30 or the mk1), as well and aftermarket engine parts (this largely due to the thanks that the powerhouse 3s-ge/gte was used in several cars during the 80's/90's most notably the celica. These cars are alot harder to find in the scrap lots (at least i have never seen one). The zzw30 combines alot of what toyota learned from the aw11 and the sw20. The body has been update to a more modern car style. The car offers more power then the aw11 but less then the sw20, it is also lighter then both these models as well. Since the car is new it is almost never found in the scrap yards and parts (mainly cosmetic) will have to be purchased from the dealer if they break. The car also features a convertible top but the owner can purchase a hard top shell to place on the car if they prefer. Personally I have never been one for the spyder or the mk2 but each person has their own taste and I respect that. oh and raptor go finish your 20v conversion...then come help me with mine this upcoming summer. :P **EDIT** I forgot to mention that if you look at it from age/price point. The aw11 - can be had for $100-2500 The sw20 - usually not going to find one not matter the condition for under 2k with the nicer ones being sometimes 7+k The zzw30 - used these can be had for the same price as the nicer sw20's however at that point it becomes buyer preference and most peeps prefer the sw20 body style over the zzw30.
