Need advice on V6 conversion or Super Charger

New to the scene and looking to add some power to my MK3. Been told that a V6 is good however adds too much weight and not worth the conversion. A super charger would be my better bit. Any one out there that has added a super charger?

I have looked at the TRD super chargers for mine. Way too much $. It would seem that a turbo would be the better way to go. A 6 banger would be cool to, but back to the $ thing and alot of time investing. Don't know any one with one , though.

Thanks, your right about the $$$ and I am not to thrilled with spending the money. I do not know much about the turbo conversion but feel that the bottom end would not be strong enough to handle the added power. Would have to change a bit to get the overall performance and reliability.

Turbo = ready made kits available (MWR $5k) and 1 or maybe two other kits, easier to install.
SC = no kits, cut the firewall or customize the SC to fit, source all your parts although some people that have done this have some good documentation.

regarding the bottom end not being strong enough - either FI option is going to give you the same issue beyond a certain PSI. 6-8 seems to be safe on stock internals long term, 9-10 is also being done on stock internals and some people claim that is fine as well. 10+ you're looking at beefing up the internals.

V6 conversion, do a search in this section, there was one very well documented conversion that was custom done (and beautifully done too). Big bucks for that I'm sure. There is one other V6 conversion being discussed as a package but it is in R&D at the moment.

Finally, a common power swap that is less expensive than the above options is the 2zz swap which is pretty good, well documented and reliable. It's the engine from the Celica GT-S/Matrix/Corolla top end models. A lot of praise for the power gains on this mod.

Thank you for the great info. is the 2zz swap somewhat easy and how about the trans? What does 2zz mean? Is this the name of the motor.

I just realized what 2zz means. Any one in the Maryland area completed the swap.

IMO the 2zz is a very disappointing swap. Numbers do not tell the whole story. The 2zz lacks any amount of torque, and you don't get into the powerband until 6.5k rpm at which point your engine will go from a nice throaty sound to an angry bumble bee which sounds exactly like a vtec civic flooring it.

1zz turbo is the way to go.

There are several V6 spyders running around, only two i've heard of in the U.S., and around 4-5 in the U.K.

Paul Woods wrote a great post/build up about it on twobrutal.co.uk including all the custom work which will need to be done. Here is a link to the most recent one built (you might have to register)
TWOBRUTAL MR2

If you want your mr2 to sound like a 360, I'd go with the V6, but its the most amount of work by far. You have to cut the rear firewall and the rear crossmember, along with custom mounts. Theres more but those are the major things.

Looking at putting a Rotrex SC in my SW20 BEAMS. Waiting to see that all the legals are ok first then start.
2zz with stock parts has been done there in the states. He has >325 horses . Wont be cheap but its been done, and its soooooo small

Rotrex is a good choice, I know they make 2zz applications for the elise so it must work in the spyder. Good response, power, and small as you said.

They cost a fair bit though!
