Turbo up

does anyone have a turbo'd mr2 spyder here?
If so do you have hp/tq numbers, maybe 0-60's, and 1/4 mi.

also what kit and other mods, and prices, how long did it take to install.

Also how much is a good tune?

there is a guy here that bought a mkIII with a 1zz swapped in and a greddy supercharger on it. it put down 225rwhp on (i think) 9psi from the old owner.

yeah i am wanting to get one and drop the monkey wrench turbo kit on it(the one with the disco potato), so i was really just wanting to know about that one...but i thought that was too specific...looks like i should have just asked if anyone had a slightly modded mkIII that produced the smallest fraction more the stock hp...haha.

while were kinda on the subject, that kit comes with tthe exhaust manifold and exhaust system, so will i not have the precats?

also would you think the motor would probably be okay if its got 75k on it if i gutted the cats as soon as i got it home? or do you think the damage is allready done? cause i dont think a dealer will let me pop of the exhaust system to check for deterioration myself

The precats will be gone with a turbo exhaust manifold.

Had to tell on the motor. Prior to a change in the oil control rings (made sometime during the '02 MY) there does seem to be some problems with oil & engine longevity. Post that change the only major problem seems to be precat failure.

One thing that should be easy to check about the precats is to pull the upper two O2 sensors in the stock exhaust manifold and check to make sure the ceramic matrix is in good shape. I can't imagine a dealer that would not allow this to be done (at least by an experienced mechanic), or it they didn't, I don't think I'd buy there.

Look on spyderchat for a lot of turbo MK III info.

kool...it looked like the turbo and new exhaust system wouldn't allow for use of the precats but i figured i'd ask someone who knows.

thanks for the help guys...and possibly girls(yea i've made THAT mistake b4)

Hi mate. You might want to carry out a compression test on the engine first. That might give you warning of the oval bore situation found in some earlier cars.
As for experience of a turbo on the Mk3, I did have a turbo'd 1zz, the PE turbo kit, and mine was chargecooled. (air to water intercooler) 200bhp and 188lbft was okay, very driveable, but not as powerful as some of the other guys out there. For me, the install was missing the accompanying noise of the N/A induction kit, though it was fairly rapid, so I went for the engine I have now as an alternative.

I digress though, the MWR kit is supposed to be pretty good by all accounts, and as has been mentioned will give you a new exhaust manifold (sorry header). Installation is not too hard if you take it one step at a time and there are folks on here who can offer advice if you get into bother with it. Keep it neat as you go and you'll see where it should all fit together. The weakest part of the whole thing is the gearbox, but the engines often make up to around 280 bhp safely on stock internals with a good map. Can't stress the importance of good engine management enough. A bad map can give you serious grief.

thanx for all the good info guys its been really helpful....... the pre-cats thing is the only part of the car that has me worried a bit...but hopefully if i take the out as soon as i get the car i will be okay........one last question: how long do you think the clutch will last if i don't do hard launches, and don't slip it much?

those are good numbers....the MWR site claims that their kit can run 10psi on stock motor and make like 270hp....outrun a c5 corvette on quarter-mile...its a big claim, and hopefully i'll be able to test it out....heres their link

Monkeywrench Racing

its basically a hand-picked kit.....much better than greddy or whatnot(but much more expensive)
