2001 Air Filter Replacement

Hello everyone!

I'm a new member, first-time poster.

I apologize if I'm posting this in the wrong section...

This may be a silly question, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to replace the air filter. I snap off the clips on the cover, but nothing seems to come loose. I also wonder if I really have to remove those two sturdy cross hatch bars over the engine.

Once you release the clips it helps to use a screw driver and pry apart the lid from the base. IIRC you have to come down from the top and pry the lid by spinning the screwdriver forcing the lid to slide forward to the front of the car. It's a total pain in the ass.
