Newbe in Texas
Hello Folks,
Just purchased my 04 Spyder this month and like all my toys I want to add to it. I'd like to know the basics first, wheels.. the stock 15/16 inch set up, can it be done better? I'm not intersted in screwing up the handleing but if someone was in the market for a new look, what would be the best way to go? The current set up (stock) has a ride that is all sports car, every little bump in the road you feel, I expect that, but if I wanted to go with some bronze wheels to complement the camel colored top, would it be worth the investment to go with a 17 inch wheel all around (that could be rotated) and lower profile tires or would that create a ride from hell? Any ideas on a great looking wheel thats in bronze? Thanks on any feedback.. Cutnshoots |

Welcome aboard! ![]() Well, it all boils down to what your plans are for the car. You get better suspension then get an alignment etc to make sure it handles at its potential or what not. Regarding the wheels, you can always get it powdercoated to the color you want. |

Yes that was one of the first things done, I had both rear struts replaced, one was leaking, tires balanced, and 4 wheel alignment. like I said, I like the way it handles the twisties, and I don't want to screw that up placing aftermarket rims and tires on it.. but sur would like to have a set of bronze rims..

Welcome!
Buying wheels and tires for the Spyder can be very frustrating, so set your expectations accordingly... If you are on stock suspension you have flexibility in larger diameter and wider size tires and offsets. On a lowered car your choices are fewer. Many will caution you (to put it politely) against going with a same size tire all the way around for the sake of being able to rotate them. Remember that the car has a rear weight bias and mid engine configuration so the staggered tire set up has some purpose. There are a handful of owners that have gone with a 'square' set up and swear it's fine. You just need to understand the potential hazards and drive accordingly with this set up. Start your shopping on Tirerack.com as they have some good fitment guides for plus sizing (and learn the offset numbers), and you can see wheels on your car with their web app, and then shop around. If you think the ride is rough already then lowered profile tires will make it worse but how much, I don't know. |
