Grinding Flywheel?? Weird sound

Noticed a noise while driving, seems to do it more when low speeds, sounds like piece of metal vibrating. The sound had gotten worse. Last night I got underneath the car had wife rev it up and from what I could tell the Flywheel would make a grinding noise. When at highway speeds it goes away until you slow down under 50-55 and it won't do it all the time?? Any suggestions? Thanks

Sure it's not a heat shield vibrating ?
One can only hope for something so simple.
Get it on a lift ! If it is metal on metal it won't fix itself.

Buddy told me could be a water pump but probably not the flywheel. I check the heat shield that was the first thing I thought too. I have it on ramps and was laying pretty much right under the trans and I could swear it sounded like it came from the flywheel, but I cannot think of one reason it would make that noise. The car is in netural and my wife revs it and it makes the noise. I will invstigate more since the motor is cool now.

My Google Map

Is it speed related or gear and RPM related? It might be a gear/synchro or something in the tranny.

Can you go 55 and push in the clutch and the sound is still there? If in gear is the sound under deceleration or acceleration?

The sound is still there with the car in neutral no clutch pushed in. The transmisson seems to shift smooth and no clutch slippage. I didnt try pushing in the clutch when it makes the noise see if it stops, will try that tonight. You have to rev it pretty good to get it to make the noise, seems worse at low rpms, around 55+ mph seems to go away.

I think there is a chance it is a transmission bearing that is beginning to fail. You will need to get the transaxle warm, if not hot; get it on a lift, and put a stethoscope to it. It will be an opportunity to check for rattling heatshields while under there as well.

If it is the bearing, fixing it now before it totally fails and leaves metal parts to get in between gears may be significantly cheaper.

I say all this since I had a total failure of my transaxle. I initially thought it was a heatshield problem, but it progressed rapidly during an Interstate highway run from Virginia to Florida - cost was a couple of grand.

Hopefully my concern is totally unfounded and all you need is a clamp around a heatshield. Best of luck.
