five pages and I didn't once see any mention....
How much primer did you use? I'll be doing my mk1 soon and need to know how much primer I'll be going through, roughly. Also, what kind of primer did you use? thanks ![]() |

Awesome thread, but I've just got to say...
Pearl for your first paint job? You are a much braver man than I! ![]() I picked up a DeVilbiss FinishLine 3 HVLP last year so that I could delve into the world of auto paint. The first thing I did was paint my garage with it just to get used to the gun. Learned a lot from doing that (mostly, how to break down, clean, lubricate, and reassemble my gun--I did that a lot!) For my first paint job with auto paint, however, I'm planning on doing a solid color... On my new bead blast cabinet... With really cheap paint. I should be ready to spray within the week. With a lot of luck, I may be painting my first car before the year is out. Which car that will be is anybody's guess. Anyway, keep the updates coming, and best of luck to you! I'll also be curious to know how much paint you used. |

Damn, I'm a little too quick; unless you're outside painting *right now*, which you could be since you said this weekend
![]() I'm in the process of ordering my supplies, trying to decide how much clearcoat I'll need. |

Don't have a thread just yet, I don't get the garage until monday/tuesday night- so prep work hasn't begun.
and I'm going with either satin black or satin gunmetal. I'm not as interested in a good looking finish as most, though, so my paint job won't be as epic as yours, and my thread won't be as full of great information- I'm pretty much doing an epoxy primer inside and out (redoing the interior while I'm at this), as well as undernieth the car... then some cheap paint/clear/satin clear. The way I see it, with a good epoxy primer base coat I can sand her back down to that later and do it right, once I have some idea how to handle making a good looking paintjob ![]() |

not renting, it's my fathers.
Not a single dent, scratch, or rust spot on this entire car- although theres a little surface rust that will clean up easily on the driverside door, where the trim used to be. Car spent its whole life in the desert and wasn't ever given a chance to rust. Engine was a little abused, as well as the suspension, but it was never crashed or otherwise damaged. I'm sure I'll find some, though, once I get it all ripped apart. I *do* have some body work to do, though, in that not all of the trim will be going back on (c-pillar) and will need a fabricated solution. edit: Just ordered 2 gallons of black 2-part epoxy, I'll be sanding the whole car, washing every part, and painting everything; inside and out, and undernieth I also plan to suspend my camera in the rafters attatched to a spare laptop and rigging it to take a photo every 30-60 seconds or so, for a nice timelapse video at the end. |

Oh ok thats good, I might mines a mess.
Lucky, mine had a couple dings and rust. I'm sure you saw from the pictures, so I had a tad more work and I just spotted a couple more on the hood while blocking the car that need to be fix. I'll be on it all week to get it done. I'm tired of sitting there color less. I also need to rebuild the motor. And not my MKII is giving me problems so we'll see how it goes. That's cool , how much, and by when will you be done? |

yeah, yours had been a little beat up.
Looks like my car was mostly just pounded on the highways out west, and was painted (poorly) about 5 times. I'll probably find some hidden jems of rust/dents/etc once I get her torn apart, though. Hopefully I'll have the shop all set up tonight to get started. |

Yeah but its all good now.
Mine didn't have that chance since is sat for years because the rod and rod bearing were all messed up and made a knocking sound. Hopefully not, will make everything easier and faster. Good luck |

I just started fixing my mkII front bumper in prep for paint........its going to take a lot of work to get my cars frontend in shape before paint, got in before the rust though its only just started around some of the frame. Its not hard just tedious.

![]() Mine is all cracked as well, I'm not sure what I'm going to do with the plate holes I may move the plate I may not we'll see. I may do a write up on it because all the little vertical things had broken or half torn so I'm making my own supports and using a couple nicely shaped ones made of plywood glassed over rather than a bunch of little supports like the stock bumper. I'll see how it turns out first and what messes up. |
