Are the cheapy 170 dollar ebay drilled slotted rotors with pads worth it? I dunno seems like a bunch of crap to me but if anyone has had experience or know someone who does please let me know. Thanks for your time.

IMO i wouldn't go for them. brakes aren't the place to go trying to save money. i would go to a parts shop and have a look around for prices there. i went for some slotted rotors front and rear and good pads. where are you from as i might be able to help with part numbers (well if in australia at least)

Yea actually I live in the sates (maryland), i may go for some slotted rotors, just have to wait a few paychecks.

Aren't slotted rotors like cheese graters for your pads?

My understanding is that slottled rotors aren't that bad for pads, they just evenly scrape off any glazing that develops on pads under hard braking. Cross drilled on the other hand does have a strong cheese grater effect.

NOTE: This isn't from personal experience, just what I've read from some engineer written articles on brakes.

you dont need/want slots or holes in your rotors. they work great solid and have drastically less cracking issues.

If you want to get some, skip on the drilling. They can crack. Slotted works fine by releasing hot gasses that build up between the pads and rotor.

brake pads havent out-gassed since the 70's. controlling pad gas is no longer an issue.

What was the gas coming from in the old pads? I'm interested...

Pads used to be made of an organic materiel. When they'd get superheated they would cook and release gasses. No organics in metallic or ceramic pads.

the drilled rotors i have here has the holes chamfered so it's not going to slice the pad. perhaps it's how they made it

Ill think about going with standard, vented rotors. I just wanted to see if they would hold up and not glow (fro lack of heat disipation) when I do get a chance to track my sugar sweet thing.

when i ordered my slotted rotors i was talking to a techie and he said the main use of the slots are to remove any brake dust that gets trapped against the pad. by removing this you are braking with a "clean" pad every time you go for the brakes, ie more consistant + stronger braking. it may seem that your pads dont last as long but that is for a couple of reasons. first of all because you are braking with a "clean" pad every time you brake it. it will seem you are not getting the life out of the pad as you are not braking with dust coating the pad. second of all, most of the time people will upgrade their pads the softer "better" pads that genrally dont last as long.

cross drilled rotors normally have slots too. the holes in them are to keep brake rotor and pad temps down, not much more.

MrRed, i dont know about in the USDM models but in JDM models the rears are solid and only the fronts are vented. i dont THINK you can upgrade to vented on the rear as they are too wide for the caliper.

No offense but that sounds like snake oil to me. If there is any benefit to this the difference has to be just about negligable because ultimately as long as your brakes are able to lock up the tires you're just not going to get any more stopping out of "clean" pads. The only time your pads shouldn't be able to lock up the tires is if they're overheated or worn and being dust free isn't going to help this.

This is definitely hogwash. Cross drilling does absolutely nothing for rotor and pad temps. If anything the reduction in mass of the rotor is going to cause the rotors to overheat even faster.

thats strange both my 91n/a and 93t are vented at the back. heck the supra rotors he rear i have are vented

91n/a VS supra MKIV n/a

If I could i get stock calipers off the front of an mr2 and install them in the back? I know the rotors are differnt but would that work?

Also are their reasonably priced aftermarket calipers that would allow for a vented rear?
