Basic brake work...
Hi guys, my cous and i put rotors/ pads on the rear of my "new" '88 yesterday.
I took a few vid clips. Haven't even reviewed them yet cause i left my cam at the garage. We aren't proffesionals by any means, but we can usually get the job done. my question is, if i start posting some of these clips - i don't have editing sftware to string them together- to youtube- would they be of any use to the folks who are just starting out wrenching ? I feel a little sheepish about putting it out there(...not good enough ?). I guess i really need to get some vid edit SW so i can put something coherent together. |

Have you ever been on youtube?
there is no such concept as "good enough" or "not good enough" for youtube. I'm sure someone can post a relevant example. |

old man def post them up. i am a computer guy so i am pretty much mint new to auto and since you got an 88 alot of the videos would help me out! i haven't even looked at my breaks yet cause i already got enough on my plate. also if you have windows xp, there is a program called windows movie maker. throw up them vids sir! thanks man!

Ok then....please be advised these vids are for entertainment purposes ONLY.
We are not proffesionals. Don't try this at home. Working on your own car could result in serious bodily harm OR DEATH. With that caveat stated, here goes...the first in a never ending series of "How we do it". BTW, I survived almost 100 mi. of seriously fun driving yesterday in the little teryota. There were carazies out there in 4wds driving faster than I wanted to. WTF, are they carzy ? P.S. my camera makes .MOV files...i think these may be incompatable w/ MS software... sliding slide
here's what it looks like when the slide slides...

Grease behind clips.
We're using synthetic grease behind those clips to retard rust that tends to pinch things.
We clean the new rotors w/ brake cleaning fluid. Last edited by GrandpaGofast; 07-21-2009 at 09:44 AM.. Reason: re-wording for clarity...adding clips. |

To allow for the extra thickness of the new pads, the piston needs to be pressed back into the caliper, however, on these type brakes, the piston needs to be turned as it is being pressed. this is because (if i understood correctly) the piston is threaded for the mechanical parking brake mechanism.. Last one...
Depressions in the caliper piston- there is a tit on the pad backing that should go into the depression
Be careful not to get any anti-sieze on the brake pad surface, or the rotor faces- these should be nice and clean from the get-go. OK, this was a first attempt. When we do the fronts, I'll try to do a little better. I know this was a bit sketchy. My cous is a little camera shy, but once he gets used to it , he'll prolly start hamming it up. i had my car up on stands today and have been hearing a scraping sound so i tried to spin the wheel i suspected to be makin the noise. it seems the caliper is locked closed... i am gonna have some fun brake work ahead on the 15th!
