some idle problems here to
my car has been perfenct for a while now no problems but today it was acting funny. when ever i had to stop red light, stop sign, ect. the revs would drop to like 500 and it would seem that that car was not running so i give it some gas to get it to start and it would be fine. it kept on doin that. i have no idea whats wrong with it. i havent replaced anything. other then the thermostat like 3 months ago. what do you gusy think.

A Simple Start And Basic Maintenance Item Would Be To Clean The Throttle Body. Carbon Gets Built Up And Can Keep The Throttle Plate Stuck Closed = Low Idle.

if cleaning doesn't solve it, check the air filter; maybe replace fuel filter.

You should find it on the firewall behind the engine; you'll see the AC canister to the left and the fuel filter is next to it on the right. Disconnect the neg. battery cable, there are 2 connections on the top and bottom of the filter and a small bracket holding it to the firewall. hold a thick rag around the fuel lines when you disconnect them as gas may spray out (remove slowly) - you'll probably want to get under the car to remove the bottom one. Try to keep the fuel lines pointing up so less fuel will leak out all over you. (smoking not recommended when doing this) - remove filter from bracket, put new filter in and reconnect the lines. I know last time I replaced mine I had to hold the throttle to regain good fuel pressure when starting it. Just hold the gas about 25-50% down when you start it until it fires up. It has been a few years since I did this on an MK1 but I'm pretty sure thats all there is to it. I'm sure someone will offer corrections if I missed anything.
