Should I buy this 20v mr2
Hi Guys ,
Been looking at a mr2 locally with a silvertop 20v conversion . The car it self is decent , paint is okay and is pretty much in order , trouble is the engine doesn't run . Apparently it ran fine for the current owner for three years and suddenly it died at a stop sign . He is not mechanically inclined and has tried to pay to get it running , but nobody can figure it out . He wants 2200.00 for it as is . It cranks over fine but won't start . Can you get a code from the computer when you do a conversion or are you out in left field . I think the timing belt is fine as it sounds right when its cranking , should I get involved or is it a sure deal Thanks |

Is this the bright yellow 20v in Winsconsin? This is one of the first 20v swaps. I'm guessing it was done around 1998. The car is almost famous, well at least to me and a few other old 20v Mr2 people.
He's had major problems getting it back up and running. I'm guessing that during the original swap, the diagnostic connector was removed, so checking codes might not be real easy. I'm not sure that the check engine light is even wired up. I was talking to the current owner about supplying a new wiring harness and set of sensors to get the car back up and running. He's been on the fence for a while as to whether or not he really wants to get rid of it. Its not gauranteed that a new harness and sensors would fix everthing, but it would eliminate a lot of electrical sources of the problem. Of course with my harness you'd have a working check engine light, and be able to read codes easily. If you think you're up to it, go ahead and get it. Its a pretty nice car. |
