22R In a MK1 ?

I bumped into a guy driving a red mk1 while driving down the road the other day and as usual I honk and wave as I pass by him, turns out he was going the same direction as I was so we played a little cat and mouse on the freeway until we came to a traffic light. He pulls up next to me and we start BS'ing about deuces and he says he just bought the one he was driving and it's and NA, He tells me about his previous 86 which had a 22R engine in it, I kinda went WTF? 22R in a mk1 why? Needles to say I ask him if he's a board member and he says "oh there is a site for these" I told him yeah and he definately had to check it out so I gav e him the web adress. So would there be any advantages of having a 22R in a MK1? To me it seems like the 22R would be inferior to the 4AGE and the only real reason to run a 22R would be simplicity.I'm aware that 22R's can be bad ass little motors however arent they carbourated? Interesting to me.

There 22R is carbonated. The 22RE is fuel injected. There is also a 22RE turbo. I didn't know that the 22R was ever in a MR2?

It was definately a swap. In my long and rambling post what i was getting at is could this be benificial to swap into an mk1? and how hard would the swap be. I'm sure one of the YOTA o.g's will know.

well, the 22R is a longitudinal engine originally. i would be very curious to see what transfer case/transmission this person used and whether he no longer has use of the rear trunk. yes, the 22R can be made pretty badass, but there is no way in hell it'll rev nearly the same way a 4AG variant would. not only that, but i would be more inclined to use an 18RG if i was going to use an engine out of a truck/early ST/RA.

Im thinking he probably just didnt know what he was talking about =P

He probably heard from someone who heard from someone who didnt know what he was talking about and thought/made up that the Mk1 had a 22R in it.

And to answer your question: Like the geek said, there's pretty much no benefit to putting a 22R into a MkI unless youve got one that you built up already and just decided "Hey... ima drop this into my deuce."

Even if you wanted to race in a class that allowed no EFI you would be better of with a 4A with side draft webbers.

As he was talking about the 22r I was thinking he was mistaken, I did however direct him to the site so maybe he will come on and clear things up. He seemed like a cool guy for sure but sort of oblivious to all things MR2 so far, Im really hoping he shows up here or I see him again.

My dads 1980 Celica GT has one of those. SOHC 8-valve 2.4 liter. I dont think they ever made a FWD transmission for that engine. When the Celica initially switched to FWD they went from the 22r to the 2S-E for 1986 but did quickly change to the 3S-FE for 1987. (For ST's and GT's) However they continued the 22R-E in RWD trucks. The 22R is a good motor it makes alot of torque for a 4-banger, however it cant breath up top. You might as well buy a Fiero if somone really wanted go to all the trouble for this swap, you'll get a similiar powerband I think... I doubt they put one in an MR2 ever, I think someone was BSing or they were mis-informed. I agree with the 18R-G being better but I would go with a 3T-G Not in an MR2 though....
