Need some insight

Been think on how I should intercool the 85. Was thinking about placing a cooler over the tranaxle side of the engine bay where the battery use to be (moved up front for room). That way it would set under the driverside hood louvers. Than I was going to get a air scoop that wouldthe mount where the removable panels are that sit next to the hood on each end. Use that scoop to channel air by way of a fiberglassed scoop attachment that the intercooler would sit in with a air passage under it that would force cool outside air up through the intercooler and out the hood louvers. Only concern would be engine bay heat not having that channel for escape. Unless I switch hood for the SC version that has the extra louvers on the pass-side of it.. Insite please.. Tks Darylp

do you really have to go to an air to air intercooler? i would try a water to air and run another radiator up front. in theory this would work better in a midship car however i have never tried.

Might look into that need to see if there room to run hoses to the front.

i saw a Subaru WRX in japan that had the radiator in the boot. it had fans picking air up from under the car and out the top of the boot. that would be nice and differant but cost a lot i guess. what about a dry ice intercooler set up? it would be for drag use only though as the ice wouldnt last too long.

Not sure if I underatnd the OP, that was pretty hard to read...

But the natural airflow of the MR2 has a huge torrent of air come up through the bottom of the engine bay and out the top. There is not a chance in hell that your air2air would get insufficient cool air flow in the stock location with the SC lid.

If you were to install that scoop, some how duct it through the IC, then dump out the bottom, you will actually have an overheating intercooler in a pretty scoop, because the air coming up through the engine bay will cancel any air caught by the scoop, and the IC will sit in significantly stagnant air.

Upon re-rading this, I think the OP wants to duct the scoop up through the bottom of the IC, then out the top of the lid. If that is so, that would work nicely. But then that would block the engine bay air, as he said. You could either cut out the louvers on the SC lid to accomodate the airflow (which I wouldn't do since water will pour on the head in the rain) or you can use an NA lid.

I use an NA lid on my swap because I think the SC lid is ugly. But if you use the NA lid with the intercooler, you'll want to cut the vent guard off so it doesn't interfere with the IC. Also note that the vents on the NA lid provide less vent area than the single big vent on the SC lid, food for thought...

Yes that was I was planing to do. Sorry if it was hard to read. Place scoop on driverside of rear decklid make a pan with duct work in it that would deliver the air from the scoop to the bottom of a air to air cooler than vent that air out the top through the stock deck lid. Just worried about blocking off that side with a large intercooler and not allowing the hot engine bay air a route to vent out.

I might be wrong about this, but I think that HKS (or maybe someone else) used to make an intercooler kit that included a metal enclosure for the IC that sat really close to the bottom driver's side of the firewall, with a lip that protruded a little below the bottom of the underside of the car, and directed air back and then up through the IC, directing the air upwards and out with the natural flow, while still insulating the IC a bit. I don't quite know if I'm explaining this right, but I can't find a picture of it in my archive of crap. Maybe it used a fan too? Or was that the kit that mounted on the passenger's side scoop? Anyways, just thought I'd throw that in.

i use w2a i/c set-up and they IMO rock! there is plenty of space to either run pipes along under the sills to the front or down the guts of the chassis with the other pipes unders the splash trays.

Alterator vs. Metal Engine Cover ?

Down here in Rainland, USA we discovered that the water drainage from the metal engine cover was killing our alternators !!!

Yeap, look straight down that engine vent hole behind the passengers head area.

Lots and lots of water directed right into the ventilated front of the alternator.

We fiberglass small diverters to the metal cover to fix. (pics avail..)

That's why I like the lightweight units.

Personal preferences..
Isn't America Great??
