Motor Parts Swaping Between Years
I have an 85 5 speed and am looking to get a 87 or 88 N/A 5 speed. Now the deal is i want to swap all the motors parts off the 85 5-Rib block to the 87-88 7-Rib block...is everything internal wise the same from these 2 motors or did something change? my other big concern was the clutches...i have a TRD street clutch in my 85 and i want to swap it to the 87-88 tranny. i think that when it went to the 7-Rib block that the clutches up-sized also. 200mm->212mm. anyone know for a fact about any of this?

what month 85 do you have? i have a later year 85 and i have a 212mm clutch. i think it changed over between the 5th-6th month. why are you doing this as i cant really see many gains in doing so.

mainly i own the 85 now and the motor was completely re-built, has about $4K into motor alone and only has 15 miles on it since i rebuilt it. but i hacked up the body a bit doing stupid things that you do when your young, the wiring is shot, ground control coilovers with 20 year old struts, bad steering rack, hacked up steering wheel with no horn....so i figured buying another car and swaping over the motor is alot easier and cheaper than fixing everything wrong with my car now. and i wanted to go with a 87-88 because of the cleaner body style, the 7 rib block which is stronger and bigger brakes. and keep the car stock looking this time around!
as for the month...im not home right now to check but ill get back to you on that... the thing is i dont know what clutch i have since i bought it from the dealer and all i told them was the year. so who knows what size they gave me. Last edited by Stealth85; 09-19-2007 at 09:49 PM.. |

ehhh the tranny is ok.... if i get it up to 7000 rpm and shift it grinds a bit. so when i buy the "new" MR2 ill see how that one is, thats why i wanted to know if it would fit...but it still could be the 212mm one because they just asked the year and that was it and i only drove the car for 15 miles with the new clutch in it so who knows....ill see when i get the new car......compare the two.
