AFM question

I have a 87 na mr2. I am pretty sure my Air flow meter called it quits. My car ran rich and missed alot, things got worse and it won't even start. The plugs are soaked in gas and it smells like fuel. The only way i can get it to start is flooring it.
That being said, what is the difference is the 85-86 afm and the 87-89? The part numbers are different, and the air box mounts directly to the 85-86. Other than that is there any other difference? I can get a 85-86 rebuilt afm for less than half of a 87+. Can I use a earlier model afm on my 87? Thanks guys

Um, no. Maybe just in the US, but they are AFMs. MAP sensors are newer and better.

It says the 83-87.5 is ether MAP or AFM. What I stated, I need to know if the 85-86 AFM is the same internally as the 87-89 AFM. Can somebody be help me?

I could have sworn all US 4age's in the MR2 use AFM. Only MAP sensored one being the Geo Prizm. I suggest you read the manual for pre 87 and 87+ to compare specs and pictures. pretty sure they'll be the same though. I guess ultimate thing saying they are the same would be if part # is the same. look that up.

They look slightly different and the part number are different.
