Allright, pretty new to the tuning world, I have an 85 N/A and with the turbo ive pulled off an 89 Saab 900 (garrett air research t-3) im thinking of rigging to to my mid engine baby.
I have the turbo and the car, what all else can i expect to need? links and price guestimates would be more than alittle helpfull |

To do it right, everything above and more
intercooler piping maybe water injection uprated clutch possibly the more robust E-series SC trans and axles which no one has extra of likely some of the lower compression forged pistons if you're thinking anything beyond tiny amounts of power hmmm... the list could go on. If you had the GZE to begin with, you'd be at least in the ballpark for a reliable build over time. reliable, cheap, powerful... pick 2 ONLY. Last edited by WIWhite87; 12-02-2005 at 04:52 PM.. |

http://www.jgstools.com/ they carry alot of the stuff you will need. Their prices are fair to considering most custom made manifolds are 500+

yea i belvee the above posts got it right...and that little turbo is pirtty good for what you want to do.
Keep an eye on tuning to not get any detonation and you will be pritty safe. but again as mentioned prepair to spend a hefty penny on supporting mods fuel system: Pump, injectors, for fuel management a piggy back may work out but possibly going standalone may be easier depending on what your comfortable with. |

Don't flame me over this - I'm just sharing my experience
I was running Megasquirt for a while on my turbo'd NA motor, but it started having problems when my battery and alternator were dying (didn't realize that was the cause though) so I pulled my MS and hooked my NA ECU back up. With 7psi, NA fuel pump, GZE injectors, NA ecu, GZE FPR, NA AFM tightened a couple clicks, Thunderbird IC, and my timing at stock - as inspired by PapoJ, Rally2, and Feral - it ran great with no detonation as long as it didn't get too hot outside. Never dyno'd it though, but the butt dyno said it was good! Backing the timing off 2* eliminated the hot weather ping too. Unfortunately my used and abused T3 turbo started puking oil out the exhaust side, so I put my NA exhaust and whatnot back on. I should have it back up and boosting on NA electronics soon, and then I'm going to start re-tuning my MS... my gf just bought me a new LC-1 wideband, so I can really get this thing dialed in! On a side note, I'm still building my low comp motor - .5mm over GZE balanced, blueprinted, and cam'd... just need more money... Last edited by CpuZapper; 12-22-2005 at 08:28 PM.. |

The one that's in my car? 5-rib... The new one is 7 rib, but a 5 should be fine upwards of 200hp, which is about the max you'll want to shoot for unless you want to spend some decent time and money tuning. The 5-ribs are also lighter, and more free-revving to begin with, so they end up being more fun to drive if you're not making big power.

Ya, my damn megasquirt still doesn't work right after new battery and alternator... I drop spark for a couple seconds about every 15 seconds. I guess I'm just gonna keep running on NA electronics as I haven't had any problems yet.

Nope... I'm just gonna troubleshoot it when I have time. I've got a couple friends who are EEs so I'll just have them go over the schematics and test crap for me. I think it's probably something with my ignition system. I modified my MS to work with the OEM Toyota VAST (Variable Advance Spark Timing) and I'm pretty sure that there's some line noise, or maybe a low voltage condition. The other thing that happened was something got shorted, and I blew out my old ignitor. It ran ok after I replaced it, but I think I might have caused some damage to my dizzy. The other thing is that I replaced the seals in the dizzy, and I think I might have knocked one of the sensors out of adjustment. I'll probably just switch to EDIS and call it good. It doesn't seem to be a problem with fuel, just spark... and I modified the MS to make it run spark for my setup, so it may just be whacked... maybe...

oh man yea you gotta watch out with that...toyota signals and sensors are very weak for some reason and it frusterates piggyback makers and stuff.
I would get rid of that and go with something like you mentioned EDIS those setups work well. |
