How do I remove the selector shaft?

Making progress with the swap. Timing belt, headgasket, water pump. Everything is moving along great except...

How do I take off the selector shaft from the original tranny? Please be specific... I'm not good at mechanics.

I removed the 4 bolts on the top, and whatever the thingy is that attaches to the bottom with a square piece. I know I can twist it into one position and pull it straight out (already did with the ST trans) but I can't get one piece off the bottom. It has a bolt with a circular head and a nut on the end of it. I removed the nut, tried hammering it out (so that I can unscrew it.) but from the looks of it, I have to remove a bottom piece to get the shaft to clear. anyone?

If I understand correctly you are talking about the flat tapered pin that is threaded on the end (holding the shift linkage on the shaft). Put some penetrating oil on it tonight and tomorrow put the nut back on without the washer, leaving a gap between the nut and the shifter and using an aluminum faced hammer or an aluminum drift whack the bejeebers out of the end of the shaft and nut and drive the pin out.

Once you break it loose the pin will come out and you can remove the shift linkage. Use aluminum or bend your tapered pin and nut.

Good luck!

Thank you. I whacked the crap out of it and that worked. i moved it over, drilled my hole and used the old seal plus gasket sealer. it shifts by hand like it did on the old tranny. thanks alot!

Glad I could help. While a hammer is almost the last tool of choice for me (for something like that), there are times when nothing else will do the job.
