Here's another one of the write-ups that I've made that crosses over with the mk1 mr2's

Very, very, very helpful!! I recently had my distributor out,& ended up reinstalling it due to not being able to remove the old gear dowel! I drilled one end, then attempted to punch out the rest of the dowl, then I proceeded to put it on a press, bending the driver!

Thanks for detailed instructions and photos! I just performed the operation for my '89 SC MR2. As noted, the difficult part was getting the gear off the shaft. I followed the instructions and drilled all the way through the pin, but found I ended up off center. Fortunately I was still within the pin and didn't damage the shaft. It took heat with a punch to get the pin out. However, having a hole in the pin did not help things IMO. If I were to do this again I would just drill off the mushroomed portion and then go after it with a punch (and any required heat).
Even so, I found it difficult to know how far to drill down to take off the mushroomed end. BTW, my distributor was a little different than the one pictured, but you get the idea. |

you should include that in one way or another you should mark the shaft/gear to ensure you don't accidentally put the lower gear on 180* off.

so glad I sent mine out to get cleaned/redone for like $60 bucks. as nice as that write up is, I didn't want to mess anything up and left it to someone who has done it countless times.

Who'd you send it to? I need to get mine re-done too and I'm not sure if I should do it myself, don't want to screw something up

Check out RockAuto.com for your MR2 MK1 parts. They have a good selection and a rebuild service as well.

Just did this job, using the same rebuild kit.
Was easy, with the exception of drilling out the punch pin. It just took a little longer, but there were no problems. |
