What to do?

I have a 87 mr2 n/a

I was wondering what I could do that could get a little more power out of it, without going broke. (Probably around $1000 spending limit or less)

Would I be better off doing modications to the age or just going for the full swap?

Opinions would be much appreciated

Swap is FTW. There is not a huge amount you can do to the n/a to get a lot of horsepower other than slightly better cams, better pistons and better air/exhaust flow (within your budget). And to gain full hp from the n/a you need a better computer which is pricey. I think a 20v would suit you nicely if you don't plan on any major engine development, if you do plan later upgrades 4agze. This is of coarse doing the work yourself, swaps are too expensive to get done at a shop.

I'd love to do some forced induction later on in the future.

4agze seems like the best choice. But then again I would kill to have a 3sgte put in there.
How much more would I have to do as opposed to the 4agze?

A 3sgte is very doable these days. Just look for the right deal and get the correct equipment. Lots of information about that if just look. After you find the engine, you can get mounts from Chico Raceworks (i think thats who makes em) and help with the wiring harness from mr220v here on the board.

I think the average MK1.5 swap takes 1.5 years. I'm contemplating it myself
