Trouble codes from ECU-Mark 1 85-89 Models

Since I only have an 89 Service Manual does any one know whether all Mark1 Trouble Codes are the same from 85-89?

What are the following? Do they relate to Mark1 mr2's?

TCCS-E
TCCS-L
TCCS-M

How do/can Mark 1 ECU's produce EFI Codes?

The early MK1 codes are different, here are the procedures and codes.
Check codes with the throttle closed, transmission in neutral, all accessories off, and engine at normal operating temperature.
Turn ignition to ON but do not start,
Short T - E1 on service connector,
The check engine light will flashing indicating the codes.
Normal code is 1 flash every 5 seconds or so.
Fault codes will read in ascending order, - code - 2.5 second pause - code - 2.5 second pause - code, etc. until all codes are read.

1 = Normal (No codes recorded)
2 = AFM signal (Open in VC, VS, VB, or E2 or short in EC)
3 = Ignition signal (no signal from igniter 4 times in a row)
4 = water temp sensor (fault in coolant temp. sensor circuit)
5 = O2 sensor (open in O2 sensor - lean signal only)
6 = RPM signal (No Ne, G signal within several seconds after start)
7 = TPS (circuit fault in TPS signal)
8 = Intake air temp sensor (fault in intake air temp sensor circuit)
9 = (There is no 9)
10 = Starter signal (no STA signal before engine reaches 800 RPM)
11 = Switch signal (AC switch on, TPS idle switch off, or AT shift in D during check)

This is for the early NA MK1s.

Thanks Bro, I get an occasional question on the 85's and 86's and wanted to get things straight, evidently starting in 87 and thru to 89 we get the double digit signals.

BTW I've got a 86 NA AT parts car out back I'd sure like to move, know anybody interested in the bits and pieces?

I inventoried my garage after 19 years of racing and street driving, whatta think of my collection?

That just means that the AC switch was on during the diagnostic test.

Still getting a code 51? No a/c on, but my o2 sensor looks like its shot and the car misfires pretty bad. I changed the cap and rotor and spark plugs.

Just to be clear, I have and 88 S/C so codes 1-12 are for earlier MR2's and 11-71 are for 4AGZE. I was looking at a repair manual for an 87 and it only showed codes 1-12, and I was getting 2 and 5 which are AFM and o2 sensor, but once I clear the codes and start my car and re-do I get 5 - 1. Any suggestions?

Code 51 What the heck?

I also have alot this erroneous code #51's when all my a/c functions are switched off or not connected.

I'm sure there's a story here, but till I hear one I ignore this.

Well my car is running very rich, I didn't have a cat, just a test pipe and when I removed it it was full of black sut, it was caked in there. Also the car misfires pretty bad. I chenaged the cap, rotor and plugs. THe search continues!

Ok decided to put the o2 sensor back, started the car, let it run then shut it off and read the codes, 21,51,52. Reset the ecu and read the codes again, 51 only, but if I start the car I am sure I will get the 21, 52 again. So I am going to change the o2 sensor, hoping it will fix the bad mis-fire and clear the codes. I will keep every one posted.

You were probably getting the code 21 because the sensor was unplugged, the 52 means your knock sensor is either not connected or bad.

Where exatly is the knock sensor? And could this also cause the car to have the misfire and run rich?

Even though this thread is a week or so old, just wanted to add that the 51 (switch signal) is not solely the a/c switch. A TPS that is not adjusted correctly will trigger a 51 too. If the IDL signal is not grounded during diagnostics (pulling codes) the 51 will be present.

Well I have cleared all my codes except 51. I took the car for a drive today and it ran like crap. Burns abit of oil, but I did a compression test and basically 140 across the board. THe car miss fires alot, from idel all the way up as you rev it? Maybe its the TPS? I also cannot build boost, but I think thats a bad sc belt. Any other suggestion.

I'm intrigued by this because I don't think I've ever seen an AW11 store a code.... typically you see the CEL flash when driving... get it home, shut it down... and then it doesn't repeat -- since nothing is stored it won't give you the code.

and by "1" flash that just means a steady flash with no longer/shorter pauses = normal.

to test the tps... simply unplug it. You'll throw another code (or codes) but the ecu will go into a mode that doesn't require the tps.... if the tps is faulty it will actually run a LOT better without it. If it isn't faulty, you won't really notice much of a change.
