4A-GE MK1 Engine Help With Flywheel!

I am Buying a 86 Toyota mr2 SC yes that's right an 86! Here in Okinawa Japan The Owner said the clutch is starting to slip. So I will be replacing the clutch. Ive heard stories of people putting a Black top flywheel is this a good idea? if so why? is there any other things i should consider doing while the transmission is down? Or any other interchangeable upgrades from a black top? Any info would help

Blacktop flywheels are lighter than the 4agze flywheel I think due to the 20v being designed to rev out. You can have your current flywheel lightened though and it would be the same. Make sure you have the flywheel surfaced when you do the clutch it makes a huge difference to clutch bite and hence how long it lasts. The other thing blacktops may have is a 6 speed box but you would be lucky to find one of them cheap or at all. They are not that common. I can't think of anything else you could do with a blacktop right now. Your lucky japan has that stuff there and easily available. Jealous

Thanks For The info i really appreciate it. As for the transmission i already have a six speed.(ha Lucky me) I bought a complete blacktop eng/trans/harness/ecu i took it out my self so i know its good. it came off a 97 trueno 94,000 K. Once again thank you!

If you have the complete box and all I would use the blacktop flywheel and clutch that way it all matches up since the crank pattern is the same. If you have the complete kit what is the blacktop's clutch like? If it is good just run with that until it burns out. Now I know you have the 6 speed I am really jealous. I have wanted one for ages but the wreckers know how hard they are to get and try to charge thousands and I paid hundreds for the car so I just stick with what I've got.

The clutch on the 6 speed trans is bad i just checked it! so i will buy a new factory clutch kit.(clutch/pressure plate/throughout bearing. and just resurface the flywheel.should i buy the clutch kit for the sc mr2 or for the black top trueno? How much do the 6 speed transmissions go for? To tell you the truth i know there rare i been here almost 3 months and i only seen the one i own. i see silvertop 5 speed and some black top 5 speed all the time but the 6 speed is rare just like the beams engine. thank you

Not sure what a 6 speed goes for in Japan but I would get a clutch kit for the blacktop and use that. I'm not sure if the 6speed has a different spline pattern or not, it should be the same as the sc but the 6speed clutch will defiantly fit (serious issues if it doesn't). You could try the sc clutch on the 6 speed box but I have never had a 6 speed to see if they are exactly the same spline. There is one spline pattern the same as a toyota hilux that I know of, don't know what boxes it came on though.

Just check the spline patterns on those clutches cause the 6 speed is the only box I'm really unsure of. Otherwise good luck hope it comes together.

The SC clutch kit is like 223mm while the BT no matter the trans is 212mm.

Find a Flywheel made for a SC model, like a Toda, then order correct clutch for the SC.
