what engine to use

im thinking about putting a different engine in my 86 and i was thinking about doing the 7AGE. what car would i need to get the block out of? i went out to pick and pull today to see what they had and the had a bunch of 2 liter corollas. is that the right block? i also saw a 84 celica gt which looks like it has the same wire harness connectors. what engine does that have in it? my goal for the swap would be able to do it with as little wire harness modification as possible.

7age needs a 7a block which is a 1.8 litre motor that came in various cars in the 7afe form. You swap the heads and fiddle the injectors to make it work. Since the head contains the electronics/harness there is little wiring to do. You need the crank and pistons from the 7a engine because the crank and bore are different.

The 2 litre block is different. That is probably a 3s block which is completely different. An 84 celica GT does not have the right engine and although it has a 1.8 variant it is the 1.8 liter 3T which again is different. A US 4agze will plug and play if you can get one of them otherwise you will have to keep taking to the junkyards to find a 7A block. You can have plug and play harnesses made by mr220v for the 20v 4age and that makes things real easy. Depends what you are looking for.

I am pretty sure that it does just bolt in because it is part of the A series engines. It does fit the tranny but I think that the clutch is different and uses a 6 bolt flywheel and crank instead of an 8 bolt. I think the spline is the same on the clutch but don't 100% trust me on that. I turned a 4afe into a 4age for my sisters car and that had a 6 bolt flywheel but the clutch matched the tranny spline all the same.

You should be able to use the same clutch because I think they use the same box. The number of bolts makes a difference to strength but only really an issue on a 7agze, it also means you can't just swap flywheels over.
