20v Starter motor

Guys
My BT just arrived and no starter. I am planning on using the intake side of the engine to mount the starter. (my C52 has a spot on both sides for the starter). Will my original 16v starter work or do I need to find a 20v specific one?

If so, is this a common part, such as a 1994 Corolla starter or something easy to find?

One source - mr220v says a 1995 corolla might work. Can anyone comment on this?

If you mist it,.

The fact are simple,.if you have a AW11 from '85 till '86 ,the 5 ribs engine,. it has the 0.7 kw starter motor.
This one is not usable and to weak,.it will burn out in a few months,.I know by experience.
The AW11 from '87 till the last had a more hi compression blok with 7 ribs.
That also had a other starter motor with 1.0 kw power and if you have that one its perfect for the 20V.
How to recognise and tell them apart,.the 0.7 kw is big and has a direct drive and the 1.0 is small and has a indirect drive to the flywheel.

Good luck and drive on dude,.

I have not noticed the stock 85-86 starter burning out when used with the 20v.

Chances are if it's ever been replaced, it's higher rated anyway. The napa replacement is rated at 1.4kw.

Well this is my experience,.
On my white '85 mk1 the engine was very old and I did my first swap.
What I did not know at first is that the engine I hastily got was not the right one.
This was the '89 7 ribs centre 4A-GE big in led "Red Top"
My first reaction after finding that out was 'wow' that's at least 10 hp more
Not knowing that so many things are different on that engine.
Well,.it was a wise lesson and a big pain in the,.. but it was done.
Six months later the starter burnt out,. strange,.you do not hear that so often.
But it probably was his time to go ,.so I got a new one.
Eight months later ,...yep,..he was gone two.
That can not be coincidence and there is some thing wrong !
I fount out later that the models till '86 ore '87 had a 5 ribs engine and from there on the engine had 7 ribs in the centre,. this was because of a higher compression rate.
Because of that higher compression rate those engines had a different starter.
Got me that starter on and the problem was gone,.it drives fine fore tree years now.

When I got the silver top I notice some thing very clear,.
The silvertop 20V engine has exactly the same 7 ribs centre engine base as that red top,. and,.. there was no starter on it.
Logicically I may assume that this 20V engine has also a high compression rate and the same problem will happen again after a phew months if I put the '86 stock one on.
So I went on a long search and finally fount one some were on the other side of the country.
Looking back it was harder to find a dissent starter then to find a dissent 20V

edit>
Keep in mind that that in general most European Mk1's are different than the US models,.
I have seen even the aw10 1.5 once in Germany on holiday.

I don't know if it's a problem where you are, but it seems like some of these re-manufactured starters and alternators we get are a guaranteed failure. It depends where you get it, but I know guys who've gone through 3-4 Autozone alternators before getting one that actually worked long term. I would prefer a junkyard alternator to one from Autozone. Napa on the other hand is better, and the best is straight from toyota.

Q: and the best is straight from toyota.

You struck the hammer with that one so right,.
Its always the best,.more expensive but simply way better quality.
