My cousin just got done turboing his 4afe corolla. he used a turbo from (I think) a 2nd gen talon. worked real well. He is dsm-drvr on this board, but is not on all the time. he would be a good referance for the DSM turbo stuff.

First I should qualify that I'm not by any means a turbo expert, and I'm just spouting out what I've read or heard before. That being said...
Getting the correct turbo can be complicated. Are you looking for a quick spool to full boost or can you handle a lot of lag to gain high end HP? Most stock street turbo cars have turbos sized to spool quickly where most street driving is performed, but these tend to run out of breath at the higher RPMs. If this is what you want, and you are doing a pure turbo conversion, then look at other model cars that are near 1.6L turbos. If instead you can handle more of a delay to get higher power later, maybe a turbo from a larger displacement 4 cylinder car would be better. I'd suggest finding the compressor map from the turbo of the vehicle, though, since you would need to run a higher pressure ratio on your 1.6L engine to obtain the same flow... check the map to make sure you are still on it. Now if this is for a twincharger project like you described in the other thread, then you will probably want to check out stock single turbos from mid-size 6 cylinder cars or big displacement turbo 4 cylinders... mayble like the older generation Nissan 300ZX turbo or from a 2.5L Subaru WRX STi. There are probably a lot of STi guys selling off their old stock turbo as they upgrade bigger, so that might be a good bet. Looks like most performance 6 cylinder cars went with smaller multiple turbos in a twin turbo or sequential turbo configuration, so you probably won't have a lot of luck finding good sized single turbos from 6 cylinder vehicles. As mentioned above, this is all from stuff I read, not hands-on experience. I'll find out how well my guesses play out when my twincharger project is completed. I went with a fairly large GT3071R turbo. |

For quick spool up and a cheap turbo you want a T25 from an eclipse, a KO3 from a VW or a VF series turbo from a WRX. All of those offer really good spool and pull all the way to redline, now I think that the VW and WRX turbos require a unique mounting flange unlike the garrett type turbos. A t3/t4 will be laggy, if you have the cash go for a dual ballbearing turbo like the T25 or T28 series from garrett.
