It has begun...
Nothing too special, but if you didn't read my massive explanation of where this car came from in the check in section, let me just mention the cliffnotes:
86 MR2 was given to me to watch for someone who went to Mexico for '6' months. Ten years later, he's still there, and of his own free will, I believe. 7 years ago, he sent me the title to sell it for him, but the motor had rodknock, because it wasn't driven at all since he had left, and hasn't been driven since. Haven't heard from him since, either. SO... I decided to fix it(finally) and make it my daily driver so that I can finish up the resto on my Mk III Supra turbo. Finally moved into a house with a garage, and three days ago, began tearing it apart. It's a black 5spd, and the body is in pretty decent shape. My plan is to make a hybrid 7AGE for just a bit more torque. ![]() lowering the motor ![]() Jacking up the rear ![]() Engine pulled Today, I removed all of the external coolant piping, intake, wiring harness, etc., and disconnected the head(which I need) and the tranny. Tomorrow I'll be pulling all of the valves/springs/retainers out so I can start cleaning up the head. This project will probably be a slightly slow one, as I need to set aside some $$ for things like cam gears, headers, full gasket set, late red top pistons and flywheel&clutch. I'll keep the pictures coming, though. ![]() |

Well, it's been awhile, with absolutely NO progress.
So, I got tired of waiting for money to roll in for the motor build, and focused a bit on the brake system instead. I'd been having a very hard time pushing the car in and out of the garage, so i figured something was wrong with the bearings or brakes. After digging into them, I found that both rear brakes were locked up a bit, and the parking brake cable was stuck on the left rear. So, I rebuilt both calipers, since they both had torn seals, and had all four rotors turned. Also, the right rear wheel bearing was not very smooth, so I replaced that today. Still waiting on new inner and outer dust seals from Toyota(they're cheaper than ANY parts store for these items!). The rebuilt hub should be back on the car Thursday night. pics: ![]() rebuilt calipers. ![]() freshly turned rotor. Hoping to pick up a 7AFE block soon, but work's been REALLY slow, and I need a new set of tires for the Supra, so not sure when that'll be. I might make the next job on the MR2 the replacement of all the bushings with urethane, while I'm messing with the suspension, since it's pretty cheap to do. ![]() |

Progress. I've finally reinstalled the rear brake calipers so was able to drop the car back onto its 4 wheels. Then this morning, I pulled the passenger seat out of my Supra, and headed down to Pull-a-Part to grab a 7AFE block. What I hate about Pull-a-Part, is that they can add a car to the lot at 9am, and if I'm there by 9:30, it's stripped of all the good sh!t !!! For example, a '97 Corolla was added to the lot the day before yesterday, I go in first thing this morning- NO ENGINE. WTF? Anyway, I got lucky(sorta) and there was a '93 that had a decent(sorta) motor.
The only problem with the one I picked up, was that it was missing its lower oil pan- the steel section. Oh well, not the end of the world. So I toss it into the Supra, bring it home and strip it down. Now I find a NEW problem- the #4 rod looks to have spun it's bearing. I mean, I take off the rod cap, and there IS no bearing...it's gone. So now I have to bring the crank to a shop to see if it can be polished within spec, or if i have to have it cut down. Also, I'm not feeling too confident about using the original #4 rod, so looks like I'm buying at least one of those as well. Anyway, here's the pics: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Monday, I'll drop off the crank, and start ordering some of the new internals. |
