Looking to purchase an MK1

So i am looking to purchase an MR2 around the year 89 and i have found 2. of the 2, the first one i found is in amazing condition, the only downside is its automatic. it has 175k on it and i really don't think its been drivin to hard but i haven't went to see it yet. she wants 3200.

the second is more of a rags to riches. i can't tell how it runs but its not the best looking. there is some minor rust spots, i would have to replace some other cosmetic pannels but i figure those can be gotten from a junkyard for not to much money.

this is the first one and the vibe i get from the owner is that this car was taken care of pretty well. obviously i won't know until i go see it.

forgive me for not making the images smaller but i wanted to get the most detail. there is a lil work in the second car but he wants only 1200. it also has 20k more miles on it... its a manual tho. i would very much love to restore it but i want to know if in the end it will be worth it?

AROUND 89? so like 91? because $3200 is a bit much for an automatic mk1 with 174k. IMO.

Depends if you enjoy restoring old cars, Only one of my 2's was ever in working condition and that was my old beater car. If you are happy to get some panels and chuck them on, bog it a little and paint the car over a few weeks you could have a nice car resonably cheap. By the time you have panels and paint plus the time you put in the price difference won't be as big but you get a manual.

The cheaper one doesn't look that bad, it isn't a dream car but the rust doesn't look real bad. If you can get the back triangle body skirt just before the rear wheel off, they have a tendancy to sit moisture in there and rust out but the bodykit hides it.

Ok thanks for you're opinions. as for the 1st bein an auto, this doesn't worry me as i planned on buyin a whole new engine/tranny in the future. i am going to look at the old one so what are the main things i should look for? i will def be looking around for more rust. the rust in that pic, is it to deep to sand off or will spots like that mean new pannels? i realy like the idea of reviving it tho. thanks for you're advice and if i do end up getting it i'll be back to find some people around my area(norfolk virginia).

also i was wondering, how would i go about meeting someone to help me out with the engine swap? i'd love to meet someone here on the forums. i got the money and the time so we'll see what happens.

well i went and checked it out and i gave it a good look over. i am getting prices on some of the more important things it will need and i am gonna buy it. i checked that area for rust and all was good(thanks for pointing it out). right now i am looking at an engine flush as its been sitting for 1.5-2 years, a new battery, and from there rims and tires. is there anything else i should check?

What location?

Ya might just want to reveal where your car shopping at (?)
you might get offers?

Might want to rethink going to a "yard" for parts. Down here in South Florida our mr2's are deemed as "too old" to be stored and sadly are crushed quickly after they hit the recyclers dirt.

turns out i came across a source for the panels, he is including 1 like he said in the add and for the other, he was unsure if it can be replaced. its the panel on the driver side rear? sounds like i'll have to cut out the rust and weld a new piece in there? or is there another way? is there a way i can stop the rust from spreading till i can get it done?

PS: Norfolk Virginia
