wholly crackers batman.
My crotch was tingling listening to that v8. If I lived anywhere near you id be in every couple of days to look at the projects. Well done, you can prove that with limitless experience, professional tools and money anything can be achieved :P |

To be honest although we do mr2 engine conversions for a living, i have found this swap relatively easy, i was expecting some major obstacle that would take a lot of thought, but it has just sort of evolved as we go along.

Now there are two trains of thought here, do i make things as sticky as possible, whack on some 888's, turn the traction control to full and let rip praying all of that traction doesn't break something..... OR, set the TC to say 10% slip, use lesser quality tyres and let it light the back end up when it wants, that way it gives my drivetrain some protection as the tyres will let go before something else does. I think i will build up my confidence levels using crappy tyres and no TC at all, then when everything is proven we can get sticky and full TC.... if it still works ok after that then the project is a total success, but we won't know until we try. |

I hope the tax man in the UK lets you write all of this off as a business expense.

I run some rims somewhere around that on my my mk1.5 they rub a little but no biggy. If I rolled the guards or cut and put some flares on it I would have no problem. They are 13" though not 17" but they are high profile as well.

I certainly agree that the V8 is going to need a wide wheel. I was just seeing if you had any information about using wide rear wheels because I've got the same issue in the back of my mind with my V6 project.
What are the widest tires you have run for your clients with the fender flares you sell? |

i say let her loose, because traction control will only hurt your drivetrain and your brakes with that kind of power
and showing off is more fun ![]() ...MORE PICTURES SIR!!! |

I think the traction control on that motor is done with a secondary electronically controlled throttle body; closes partially or completely when it wants to stop wheel spin.... doesn't affect the brakes or drivetrain.

Yes that would be with the stock ecu, but i am running a VEMS unit, which does have traction control capabilities but i have decided to run a Racelogic TC unit solely dedicated to that side of things. It cuts fuel and/or spark to varying cylinders to throttle back the engine under slip conditions, it is an extremely comprehensive unit way more capable than the factory TC or whatever the Vems can do.
More pics? certainly, what would you like to see? just more engine bay shots? |

After studying the audi cooling system (as it would be on the S8) i discovered an Mr2 coolant filler point was not going to work, the highest rated cap i can find for the Mr2 is a 1.5bar Sard cap, and the S8 runs closer to 1.7bar max pressure.... so using the mr2 filler neck was binned off.
So i needed to look at the VAG way of doing things, and took a punt on a VW golf custom expansion bottle, this will plumb up correctly to the V8 system and will have the S8 stock 22psi cap fitted, it's also a bit of eye candy in the engine bay. ![]() ![]() Last edited by Paul Woods; 02-06-2010 at 12:46 PM.. |

More test running, this time with a fully sorted cooling system, twin 11" spal fans on my radiator, hooked up to the stock Mk1 rad switch/relays and VW expansion bottle with 22psi cap.
It ran for 15 minutes with no fans on, then when it hit 88* at the EFI temp sensor the rad fans came on slowly (first stage), the temp then climbed to 92* over the next 15 minutes (no revving at all so just letting it heat soak as much as possible), no water pump hurling the coolant round quickly, just idle.At 92* the fans kicked in to their second stage and stayed on, the temp rose to 94* at the EFI sensor for 2 minutes before dropping back to 92*, fans went back onto their first stage and the cycle repeated itself. After this idle heatsoak test passed i let it get to 92* and then revved the throttle and the temp instantly dropped back to 88* so my cooling system is perfect for handling this v8. Here is my second test running video, this was early on during the warmup, EFI only at 50* or so.Everything in the bay is still dummy rigged so if things look in an odd place it is only temporary. I am still getting bad trigger errors during cranking and oddly at no other time? but this will be rectified soon. Last edited by Paul Woods; 02-06-2010 at 12:47 PM.. |

I have started work on the rollcage/chassis stiffeners part of the project, all tubing is 42mm OD 3mm thick, so far i have made the roll hoop section and door bars which have all been tack welded in place, pics to come after the holidays but in the meantime here is the design i am going for.
![]() Note the triangulation back to the rear strut towers, this is where i think it will be needed most. Last edited by Paul Woods; 02-06-2010 at 12:47 PM.. |
