Crankshaft pulley?

In the N/A car is the crank pulley supposed to split apart between the a/c belt and the alternator belt grooves? Or is mine just broken?

I'm having trouble keeping the alternator belt on cause that half of the crank pulley tends to slip back towards the block when i shut the car off. Drove around fine for the last three months with it like this, new belt and correctly tensioned. Now out of nowhere it seems to slip off and move a few grooves over. Squealing like crazy and was smoking was how i noticed.

So just wondering if it being split is the way it supposed to be? I have to run to my least favorite place (work) now. I also have access to a junk parts car if any of you think i need anything. Any info or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It must be broken. The oem 4age main pulley is a one piece unit.

If yours is broken, you need to fix it yesterday. If it breaks further, or tears loose and runs amok, you wouldn't believe how much damage could be done to your oil pump, timing cover, alternator, AC compressor etc. etc.

I removed the belts and had a closer look. Seems like the the A/C side of the pulley is stationary and the alternator side slides inward towards the block. It also slides back into place.

Going to find another one today and replace it. Never saw a pulley in a state like that, scary stuff.

The parts car i went and checked out was missing the harmonic balancer, so i decided to call up all the junkyards in about a 30 mile radius heh. After all was said and done i have no luck whatsoever.

Anyone know if the crank pulley off a similiar usdm motor might work? Or know of anyone that has one they no longer need or are willing to part with?

Murphy is kicking me and i don't like it

I'm considering oem too, just costs soo much. Like $300 if i recall.

Try private message to MR2tim. He is sitting on a ton of Mk I parts.

Try the MkI parts wanted, parts for sale forums within this website.

I got to tell you that main pulleys at junkyards are really hard to get off. I use a harmonic balancer puller, or steering wheel puller to get it off. Careful using a crowbar, or prybar to for removal. It can crack the pulley torquing it off center hard.

Add some Breakfree nut loosener before you start yanking.

Good Luck.

Thanks Jackstand.

Working on all the options now, posted, PMed and waiting. Hopefully some good news soon.

I get sad watching the car sit in my drive all still and immobile, especially when i want to go cruise on a nice day like today.

Wanted to post a few pics of the old pulley.
It fell into two pieces and easily slid off after the crank bolt was undone. Definitely could've caused some damage if it went any further.

Split at the damper

Mmm solid and crusty

My Google Map

I always thought that was a single casting that was machined. Looks like the grooved part of the pulleys are just pressed onto the center hub.

A good TIG welder should be able to get it back together without warping anything for a minimal cost and in a very short time.

Good luck.

Yay!

Back in business and road worthy thanks to a board member graciously mailing me a great condition pulley at low cost.

Thanks again to Kerry Phillips for making my 2 mobile again

Went in smooth. Cleaned it up and slid right on. No shimmies or shakes and belt is running true.
