Turbo selection
Been thinking about a potential turbo. VW/Audi has a 1.8 Litre 20 Valve engine with VVT (sounds like our beloved silvertop) 9.5-1 compression that produces 180 horses, or 100 HP/Litre. What attracts my attention is their impressive torque curve, 174 pounds @ 1950-5500 RPM. The K03 turbo is small and is more of a torque enhancer then high end power. My thinking is to drop the boost by a pound or two to compensate for the ST slightly higher compression and use the VW turbo. I am more interested in bottom torque for city driving then high HP for racing. This turbo can be had new for $300
Any comments on my thinking or alternate choices for a turbo? kerry |

Is it a steel or ceramic turbo? Ceramic are all fine and dandy except they have this tendancy to explode in your intake when the turbine touches the housing normally from pushing it hard or a worn bearing. The KO3 only runs at 7psi or so so they won't give huge boost but yeah maybe for a lower boost setup it would be alright. I know nothing about the KO3 you basically have to go out and google it and find builds that use it or ask the audi guys about it. You can putany turbo on an engine just how good is it going to work.

sound fine... is there any internal work on the 20v.... ive seen hell of 20v turbos out ther almost more than 4agtes.... yeah tuneing and a head gasket would be the least for reliability... im looking for a 20v if the tourq is like that...is it ST or BT with the light internals..?..... LIFE

Turbo
The engine is Silvertop, slightly lower compression then a blacktop, heavier internals and uses an AFM instead of a map-supposedly easier to add boost.
Again, with mild boost the stock headgasket should be fine, hopefully. Ideally the boost would be lowered at the wastegate, the Intercooler and plumbing would drop the boost some more, about 4 pounds at the throttle. 4 pounds is not much, but if I can get that boost at just above idle, it should be sweet. With premium street gas and the anti-knock sensor, the ecu should have enough range. Kerry |
