looks like i need to check my timing next...

Also if you did the popular intake mod that everyone does, you could have water in the diagnostic plug. I had the same symptoms, very sluggish till 2900-3000 then it was normal. I dried out the connector and all is well.

Timing is also a good thing to look at.

Jimmer, help me out here.. what is the relation between doing the intake mod, and getting water in your diagnostic port?

The diagnostic plug is normally mounted by engine lid latch, with the cap on top.

If you dont remount the diag connector the cap can fill with water. The cap isnt sealed either, and with it dangling the cap will be on bottom.

Ive heard of it happening to others, and the symptoms were the same, sluggish till 2900-3000rpms. It finally happened to me, when I dried out the connector everything was fine.

i have a check engine light that turns off at 85 mph in 5th gear (about 4000 rpm) maybe a little higher)). its an 86 NA. i was wondering if that would be my tvis. dont mean to hijack or anything, but i have been looking for an answer to this problem. my cooling system is bled and temperature and idle are ok, but i still have a light on. i have cleaned all air system parts when i installed my weaponR short ram intake. i have an aftermarket exhaust too. where should i start? O2 sensor?

Guys, I used to get the check engine light while on the freeway when I had that stupid loud exhaust. So check to make sure there is no air leak anywhere on your exhaust, trust me, even after getting it fixed (welded), I kept getting a leak here and there until I got them all welded. Then I installed the whole oem exhaust and then I never saw that light again. So this is from my experience. As for the idle, check your intake hose. That one used to move every now and then, which let air in through it instead of the air filter. Just my 2 cents before you go assuming worst things. Like Aaron said, check the basic stuff first, then see if that will help.

The car shows a CEL when some part of the car is worn, or failed, or out of adjustment. The first thing to do is to retrieve the codes stored in the ECU and see what they say.

Let me make this very clear: those codes absolutely do not tell you "here is a part that you must replace." What they really say is, "here is a circuit or system that is seeing a problem." Follow the diagnostic instructions in the BGB or manual - they are there for a reason!

Sorry if this is elementary, but a lot of people don't know where to start, and sometimes we need to be reminded to start at the beginning and use the tools that Toyota has given us.
