Rear brakes 85-86 vs 87-89 Mark 1's
I'm looking at the 85-86 series rear brake and comparing them to my 87-89 series here on the work bench?
I'm being told by a Hollander Parts inquiry that these are different with different part number identification? They look amazingly identical, both series appear to share the same center to center measurement of the slider pins, same pin diameter, the emergency brake equipment are the same, the openings for the pads identicle. What the hell is going on here? Here look at 'em.. Is this a Toyota Illusion or just another manufacturers way of bilking the buying public.? Doubting Tom |

Remember that not all the parts were changed in 87, toyota still used what was left on the shelves and most changes actually took place with the 88 model year. If I remember correctly the changes were on the size of the rotors and caliper brakets not the calipers.

Same calipers, larger rotors. Hardware headaches
Well Pappy, looks likes your brain cells are still in working order.
![]() The rear rotors of the 85-86 series car measure 9 1/2" diameter and the 87-89 series measure 10 1/4" which as you suggested would mandate a different caliper bracket. Supercharged models use the 87-89 criteria as well. Being in a measuring mode I found the same goes for the front vented brake rotors as well. The 85-86 series measures 9 1/2" (5/8" thick)and the 87-89 series cars run a 10" diameter rotor at 3/4" thick. In conclusion, bro's you can use any caliper anywhere but the brackets and the rotors are gonna drive you crazy ![]() |
