Intercooler for the N/A?
Im looking to drop my air temp for the intake. Could i install an Intercooler (top mounted aircooled, or trunk set water/air cooled) to do this? Anywho, if yes can anyone help me with a few setups?

The ambient air you're bringing in through a cold air intake can't be cooled any further by an air to air intercooler. It just doesn't compute.
I suppose you could suck some heat out of it with a air to water intercooler with REALLY cold water, but I highly doubt you could have it efficient enough to make any difference at all.

are you sure? On my buddys 92 N/A MR2 we made a liquid to air intercooler set up and took it to dyno, what was originaly 135hp, jumped to about 164hp after we lowered the air temp to about 47 degrees. I just am not sure i can even make an intercooler for the MK1 by. Cooling by mean of Fan and liquid.

The reasons intercoolers dont work on N/A cars are:
a) What Canadam said b) The more stuff you add to the Int/Ex the more restriction you create. The reason they work on turbo cars is because the induction is forced. Since theres always pressure pushing the intake charge through the system, the restriction gets reduced greatly. |

Hmmmm. Cold air intakes make small but significant improvements in horsepower. NOS lowers intake air temperature too. Hmmm. Interesting. But like the other posters, I'd be reluctant to add additional weight, cut holes for tubing, lay the plumbing and electrical wiring in and remember to put ice and water in the cooler mounted in the front trunk before going to work in the morning.

The only way any kind of chargecooler is going to work on an N/A car is to lower the temperature of the intake air significantly below the ambient.
Typically an I/C on a turbocharged vehicle is lowering the intake air by multiple hundred degrees. So to get the same effect on the intake air density on a vehicle using ambient air you're going to have to get the intake air to the negative degrees. Good luck with that. |

If you want lower intake temps just run your intake into the rear trunk area or get some aluminum tubing and run the intake filter under the car near the wheel well. You may need a bypass filter just incase your main filter gets wet but it will make a minor difference. I ran my setup under away from the engine cause the engine bay holds too much heat and adding an open element intake just kills your horsepower at that point!

intercoolers are there because turbochargers run on thermal energy (heat energy) as the exhaust wheel is so close the the intake wheel heat is transfured to the intake side and the air is heated up. an intercoolers job is to take away this superheated air so more oxygen can fit into the combustion chamber but doing this with as little resistance and pressure drop as possible. however without a turbo/supercharger increasing the pressure inside the intercooler it is just like having a really dirty filter as the air is finding it hard to more through. on the side of cooling the air it will but any advantage you will have by doing this you would have lost by adding the obstruction (intercooler). if you wanted it just for dyno runs or on the drag strip a dry ice intercooler setup would be the best way to go and it will lower the temp a bit but it isnt worth it for anything but very short periods. some pro drag racers use a dry ice setup as you get very little pressure drop but it will only last a run or two max but most drag racers dont use an intercooler at all. ie no point!!!
