1988 sc mr2
Hello, I am looking to buy a 1988 supercharged mr2. I have a 1886 n/a right now, but want to upgrade. Are there any problems with the engine i should look out for when buying one?
Thanks |

that's very low (if that's original miles)..... if the car's appearance matches is mileage, then if you're paying under $10,000 you're getting a bargain.

Why in the world was the transaxle out of the car? That is a danger signal. Also double check the mileage by checking the car's registration history. Mileage on the speedometer is not a guarantee of actual mileage, as the speedometer can be changed easily enough, and replacements haven't required registering in a very long time.

well according to the first owner, it was it an accident which wrecked the original transaxle. So the second owner(who has it now) bought the right one for the car, but didnt put it in. So that has to be put in and it needs paint, the body is straight. And the dents from the accident were fixed from an autobody shop. But i am still worried that something more serious could be wrong with it.

Yeah, that's a tough spot to be in. You see a car that looks like it might be a great deal, but there are definite warning signals. No matter how hard it is for you, it is best to be cautious. Try and find a mechanic qualified to check this kind of stuff, and make sure that the owner has no objections.
However, any kind of accident that can seriously damage the transaxle is one to worry about. It is in a very protected spot, for the most part, and generally very durable. |

yea apparently one of the mounts for the transaxle broke, and thats why he needed a new one. And i have seen the car, its very solid, no rust, and the interior is mint. He is asking 1800 and that is a damn good deal. what do you guys think?

More than just the mount would have had to break for them to have that much trouble. Three of the mounts bolt to the transaxle, and more than likely the bolt holes in the transaxle were probably messed up, which would really be excessive damage. If that were the case, what the hell caused that kind of damage? That would take some serious kind of accident, and I would suspect a lot else would have been damaged and had to have been repaired in the meanwhile.
I'd still say you need a highly qualified mechanic to inspect it, and still do a DMV registration history on it to verify the mileage. If the body proves to be straight, and the mileage accurate, and everything else is as you say, then go for it. But don't skimp on the inspections. |

Well, I can certainly understand the enticement. They can be great cars.
If all is as you say, then you at least have a decent start on a good car, even if you had to transplant all the good parts to another body. Good luck with it. |

yea i picked it up today. everything was mint, body is perfect and the interior is amazing. but to my surprise its an automatic. didn't even cross my mind to ask if it was a manual or not, i just assumed so. but i got it for 1500 and it only has 25,000 original miles(the original title proves that). Also it has t-tops and an alarm system. haha im curious to see what that is. So i think i got a good deal.
I have a few questions though. How rare is the automatic? how much money would it be worth all redone and fresh paint? And i need some opinions here, should i keep my 86 mr2 with a manual(possibly more fun to drive) or the supercharged automatic? |
