How does one remove this part?

Rebuilding an '89 supercharged MR2. On the A/C side of the block, toward the belts, there is a part that looks like a brass brass service bell (like you might find on a hotel check-in counter). It has a wire attached to it at the top. Two questions... what is it and how do you get it off? I put a pair of grips to it and the "bell part" just turns but the shaft stays put. It doesn't look like there is enough room to get a spanner wrench underneath the bell and, even if you could, there is no room to turn the wrench. Help!

sounds like the oil pressure sending unit..... you can use channel locks, but you will more than likely destroy it....

if you can... there is a spot to take a 12mm wrench on the underside of it... but I don't think I've ever been successful using it while the block is in the car....

You can buy a special tool, but I believe it is Toyota specific (I have 3 oil pressure sockets and none of them fit).... I usually use channel locks carefully and a rag as padding... even then I still destroy it.

When I did my 20v swap I just used channel locks and twisted it off. You don't need to grip it super tight, just tight enough to grab it. It was a little scratched up afterward but it still worked fine.
