question electric chargers
I have 87' with low miles and want to put an electric charger in of my own design. I have seen the one for about $300, but I can get a fan with 2,500 cfm for $80. An extra 20 hp would be just fine with me. Will this increase be bad for the engine? It is worth alot to me with low miles that it has. Will I mess up the air-fuel mixture? or anything else?

Maintain 2,500 cfm with what differential pressure across the fan? And with what current draw from the motor? Those are important numbers to look at.
At 12V it takes hundreds of amps to generate the power required to move this quantity of air with even a small positive differential pressure. |

I don't see it working at all, fans create large CFMs NOT pressure any extra CFM being generated that the engine isn't going to use will not go into pressure buildup it will just not exist since the fan can't hold pressure unless it's drawing some big numbers for amperage and spinning pretty damn fast.
If you look at those e-gay superchargers they do nothing even though they have high flow in fact they reduce horsepower if you look at a dyno graph. |

Another issue is that those electric blowers don't usually allow pass through which means at high RPM they become choke points.

I know that a fan can spin fast even if the air is not moving through it, or if the intake won't allow air to go through. The fan motor might overheat, or maybe not, but I am looking for a small gain in horsepower, I don't have the money to buy a good supercharger. Even if I only gained 5 or 10 hp, that;s all I can afford now. What else can I do? exhaust is from what I have read in this forum makes very little change. It seems like one can either do nothing or very big changes for more power. Am I missing something? Isthat statement correct?

One quarter of the way is massively generous.

Electric charger
Dude, that is absolutely rediculous. It takes horsepower to Force Induction an engine, either from the crankshaft ie. supercharger or from exhaust heat and pressure ie. turbocharger.
Now if U really really want to do some serious jury rigging. Go buy a high (gas) powered leaf blower and use that to pressurize/ force induction an engine. Go to youtube and look it up. Now about the electrical charger/fan... Don;t waste your time & money on such non-sense. I have a feeling U would have (expensive) electrical gremlins long before any performance increase! Kerry |

i actually 'know' someone who bought one of these. i also know the people who own/operate the dyno onto which the person placed his vehicle to test the electric fan 'supercharger'. the car lost whp (compared to his baseline sans fan). end of story.
