sc clutch

im having some troubles with my sc clutch not engaging all the way. when it engages it makes a grinding noise, the sc is still producing boost. the car has sat for about 6 months with out being ran, i was wondering if there could be any sort of build up on clutch its self from sitting so long.

Not a good noise to hear.

Hey Dude,

The only time I have had this noise was when I had a damaged disc. My car was drivable just like yours.

Our discs in the OEM version of this car is/are a critical weak spot in the drive train.

If your a street driver installing a disc with strong doubled springs in the hub is the way to go, that goofy Toyota OEM hub with rubber snubbers just can't take the heat and deterioates over time.(see picture enclosed)

If your a racer type you might consider a 'competition" disc with small pucks on the ends. One type is triangular shaped with 3 pucks (full race) and another more streetable type is with 5 pucks.

You need not replace the pressure plate it's a great unit.

Go very easy with any flywheel re-surfacing as you increase the amount of flywheel to pressure plate clearance which affects the pressure the plate can deliver thru the disc to it. If it's warped fix it, if not just buff it up some.
If it's been re-surfaced previously you may NOT be able to do it again.

yea so i took the sc unit to my mechanic the other day and we took it apart for a good and much needed cleaning, visibly nothing was wrong with it. so we started to take some detailed measurements and come to find out that one of the shafts is bent .005 of an inch. so with that being said what would you guys do, fix the sc or throw on a turbo and call it a day.

Parasitic loss and efficiency. Plus turbos that fit the 4agze are a dime a dozen.

If you can find a cheap replacement or some way to fix yours go for it otherwise put the cash you would have spent on that into a turbo setup stock electronics can do it I'd just wideband it and check all is well then go play. I'm for and against both things personally I'd turbo but I'm always tinkering and changing things.

Sure turbos are cool, but to buy and set everything up correctly, you will most likely spend more than you ever would have on just a rebuilt sc, and you will have put a lot more work into it, including the time and cost to setup the standalone properly.

The stock 4agze electrics can handle mild turbo setup done right. Also megasquirt is a snap on the 4agze and that is a pretty cheap alternative to the bigger stand alones. I have a megasquirt just no time to mess with it lately so it sits idle. Besides I said that is what I would do I'm skilled with that sorta thing it is up to OP to decide if it is worth it or not.

Adjust the clutch air gap

I wouldn't worry about the 5/1,000 ths inch wobble in the shaft. Its probably just play within the shaft bearings.

It sounds like you need to adjust the SC pulley clutch. There are shims underneath the outer clutch piece that fit on the end of the SC rotor shaft, add, remove as needed.

Rather than try measure the gap in the clutch. I power up the SC clutch with 12V and then try to rotate the SC pulley, while the rotors are locked by a piece of metal inserted through the outlet or inlet.

There's an outfit called pulleybrothers in Austailia who make new SC clutch pulleys. Yota discontinued making them. On my next major SC pulley event, I'm just going to buy a new one from pulleybrothers.
