Mark 1 crashed car-your story?

Both my wife and I had our Mark 1 NA cars distroyed last year.

My wife was rear ended, by a yuppie in a BMW Suv, sitting at a toll plaza, at 45mph.

I was also, by a Islamic Saudi at a red light, at 50mph.
(ya gotta love South Florida)

We both walked away without a scratch!!

What's your story?

I came round a corner at ludicrous speed went backwards hit a bank and rolled. Then I drove off (you can never kill a good car) but my wrist was broken when the adrenaline wore off it HURT so naturally I waited around to get my trophy for winning the season then went home the hospital was closed so I went to sleep and saw a doctor in the morning who told me I'm a tard I should of come straight away. I got the cast in the colour of my car and put numbers on it

Was also passenger in my old rally car when the girl driving took her foot out of it and parked vertical up a bank and the car sat on the back bumper at which point I bailed climbing up out of the car and went to look for an official while the next car that came across the steaming mkI went for help as well. Towed it down and drove it back to the work area with 2 bent steering arms and radiator dragging on the ground was out the next run.

I also hit a concrete wall in it sideways when a tyre burst at the track changed the rear subframe and wheel was out next race. I have heaps more stories but that is enough.

That particular car still races (all the same mkI ol 238) I'm going to be sad when we finally have the final big one in it. Gotta love the little 2 it just keeps going no matter how much I bash it.

SUPERCHARGED MR2 BURNED ALIVE

I live in California and flew out to Denver to buy a Supercharged '89 on a 2-day weekend. I forgot what I paid for it but it wasn't much... something like $700. Coming back, I got nabbed in Utah for no registration. Between Las Vegas and Palm Springs there is a shortcut through a barren desert where cell phones don't work. The shortcut is about 160 miles long but easily takes hours off the trip.

So I turn off I-15 to take the shortcut. Its about 4AM, a pitch black night and 80F. I'm flying-ass on a gravel road but this MR2 doesn't have any shocks left. So I fly over a cattle guard and when I come down the car bounces and turns sideways. So now I'm on a gravel road doing 80 MPH sideways and I really believe I am going to die. But a road grader had recently been trough and on each side was a 2 foot pile of soft desert top soil. The car went "spoof", sideways into that soft dirt. It was like hitting a stack of feather pillows.

I got out and found I had rolled the tire off the rear. I found a spare, a jack but did not have a lug tool. But being 4AM, no cell phone service and in the middle of nowhere, I made the really bad decision to drive the 20 miles back to I-15 on a rolled tire.

After a few miles, the rolled tire fell completely off, at which point I was driving on an aluminum hub which was getting smaller and smaller. After about 14 miles, a cinder off the hub stuck in the fuel line and melted a hole (the car was full of gas). "Poe-Ump" was the sound I heard behind my shoulder. I pulled over and started ditching everything into the middle of the highway that might possibly have my name on it (I didn't want the State of California to get me for a clean up and a fire call). With the fuel pump quickly pumping gas onto the asphalt, it all became a glorious spectacle... kind of like my own personal Burning Man. People commuting to Prim Casino drove out of their way and from miles around just to see what was burning so bright in the dark, dark desert.

my 87 hardtop SC was parked at work (old work, years ago)... when a dumbass co-worker decided to leave, threw his car in reverse (without looking back) and managed to smack into the side of the car perfectly with is back bumper (literally from fender to rear quarter in front of the wheel). he was only 1 space forward and 3 spaces over... yet managed to move the car sideways about 18" or so.

car was about $150 away from being totalled (as his company used 100% value).... I replaced the door and fender, pulled the dent.... painted it black.... sold/traded the car... bought it back.... traded it again... then it found it's way to a few other owners... then traded my ae86 sr5 for it back (with a now destroyed 4agze). It's the car that I made a thread about being back on the road.... Crazily enough one of the previous owners even sold it on ebay to someone in Chicago... yet when he got the car to the car hauler it wouldn't start first try and they refused to take it.... lol.

I trashed my modified 86 mr2 mk1.5 when a semi cut me off while I was flying around a corner at about 85 km/h tapped the brake and the rear left caliper seized throwing me into a full out spin slamming me into a 6" high curb and pushing the front driver side wheel back into the fender and destroying every front end component on that side. I nailed the gas to pull out of the field before I hit a drainage ditch and the bypass valve blew apart pushing the spring into the compressor wheel which destroyed the wheel and seals and filled my engine with oil causing instant hydraliuc lock which backlashed the transmission and shattered fourth gear and ripped the front and rear torque mount out of the frame(at least my welds never broke) to top that day off when the engine torqued it snapped the driver side subframe connector, I drove her to my dads shop and from there it got stripped and toted away for scrap, goodbye tempermental redhead.

um.... if it hydrolocked you wouldn't be able to drive it?

tapping the brakes wouldn't cause a caliper to seize? Maybe it had a bad cable you didn't see before? Or maybe the spin was caused by "tapping" the brakes in a corner?

the caliper siezing was due to a faulty proportianing valve witch jammed with pressure on the rear circut and considering that the passenger side hose was collapsed it only locked one side, I'll tell you this though, when I cracked the brake line open I wasn't expecting the pressure in there. As for the hydraulic locking I pulled the sparkplugs and cranked the engine over after walking over to a machine shop in that area and getting a 3AN female plug to cap off the turbo feed line. So in the end I limped it the 30 or so blocks to the shop with no rear brakes, no turbo oil supply, the front driver wheel rubbing like hell and probaly a quarter of the oil that should of been in it, and some how that engine never knocked or nothing other then blowing coolant and oil out of the front of the cylinder head.

Ya know I've never really thought that in any of my accidents all I usually think is "It'll pull out just keep your foot up it" even when I rolled my car 3 thoughts crossed my mind one was "this might break the windscreen" two was "holy **** the car is rolling" and three was "I can repaint the door now" as a side note when it was over my first reaction was to restart the car and hook reverse still ran fine but something was broken in the gearshift......oh right my wrist

Ive been sideways in the rain heaps of times and it never crosses my mind in fact my normal worry is damaging the car I value it above myself. My car is too cool to die unless it is the most spectacular in front of everyone crash ever then it would be worth it.

A couple years a go I fianlly got my 86 working and all I had to do was get it smoged. I brought it over to a place and passed with no problems. The guy closed up my hood and I was ready to take off. Two blocks latter and I see sparks shooting from the back of my hood. My mom stoped driving in the middle of the intersection and I opened up the rear hood. The car started sparking againt behind the driver side. The car bursted into flames (very luck it didn't blow up) a guy from some art college asked if he could take pics so i'd let him (least of my wories). The guy at the smog had placed the hood kepper in between the battery terminals which shorted with the ground. I ended up rebuilding the with what little knowledge I had (was in highschool) rebuilt the harness using the chard one from the fire and a doner from an auto fuse box from the pick a part, fitted an aftermarket intake, replaced the freakin battery that I had just bought..etc etc... Never sued the guy... got the car running again then the valves started leaking so its all in peices once again. If anyone has seen the pictures that the guy took I would love to have them my car is a 86' red full stock the car had like a 5ft flame shooting from the rear of the car and it was parked in the middle of an intersection..

email me the pics to andrew_liu168@yahoo.com

Lost my 86 MR2 to a traffic light malfuntion. Coming up on an intersection and my light changed to green. It was late at night and the light was still green for crossing traffic for some reason. I have to believe this because the driver of the cadillac had witnesses saying his light was green. He t-boned me right in the drivers door at about 50mph ( I was going 35 mph). Really glad I had set this car up for racing, as I had a roll bar and a 5 point harness installed and I was using them. I was still punted across 3 lanes and over the curb. The roll bar prevented the caddy from getting into the drivers compartment and the 5 point kept me from hitting anything in the car. Walked away with out a scratch. Poor car was totalled, even broke the engine and tranny as well as cracking two of my Momo Ferrari Engineering rims, still looking for 2 replacements. 15 x 7 if any one has any. It's been 2 years, but I finally found an 88 MR2 SC. I think these cars tough, but I don't like proving it. LOL.

Wow Riks..

I have friend in the Florida Region SCCA who took his car to a local garage for service.

After fixing the car the Service Manager took his racecar for a "test drive" ran a stop sign and was TeeBoned by a BIG YELLOW SCHOOL BUS.

Like you he walked away unbroken, the car was did not survive.

The cage also saved his life.

white 86 hardtop. i was coming into a right-left loooooong S-curve, right about halfway through i see 2 sets of headlights coming up, side by side, and the 2 lane road i was on. the set of headlights in my lane was considerably higher than the other set, so the only thing i could do was swerve to my right. i was going 35mph when i swerved and hit the brake. i went into a ~2ft deep ditch, hit the opening of a culvert, over to the other side of the ditch, then drove back through the ditch again and stopped right in front of the "welcome to Magalia" sign on the edge of town limits. the force of me hitting the ditch, then the culvert, then the ditch again bent my car like a taco diagonally. the roof was creased in half. i'll see if i can find any pictures of it.

oh, and neither of the other drivers stopped to see if i was alright.

Send a message via AIM to scottohno
i was driving in the left lane of a 4 lane highway divided by an 8" curb in my 86. there was a box truck to my right, and i was minding my business. all of a sudden a 70 year old man in an infinity g35 comes out of the ALDI parking lot with vengence. he barely missed the box truck, but he was hidden from my view. he was still entering my lane when i slammed on the brakes, left 4 tire marks for about 50 feet when i hit his left quarter panel at 45 MPH.

as i was being forced into the curb all i was thinking was "i just replaced my suspension, so hes gettin the curb." so while i was still making contact trying to slow down i let off the brakes, and turn the wheel to the right. i got up under the g35, sent him sideways, he went over the curb trying to steer to correct, popped all 4 tires, flew back into my lane again after hopping over the curb again with nothing but rim and flat tires, and he landed right in front of where i stopped.

no air bag went off suprisingly, but he got out of his car with no rear bumper and 4 cracked and bent wheels and asked "where the hell did you come from" i was in my lane....

my mr2 had a dent on the front passenger fender and a scuff across the front bumper. his was not drivable. he gave me $300 for a fender, which i used to buy an exhaust in stead and its a good thing cuz an 08 civic SI backed into me the next month.... no damage.
