Look to the past for ideas?

Hey Big Dude,

As you may have read here in this Forum the engineers at Toyota beefed up the 4A-GZE with forged components when they added the Supercharger to the 4A series engine.

Unfortunately they did NOT increase the crankshaft Mains sizing like the American race engine makers often do. Therefore, to me, this appears to be the limiting factor in this engine.

Toyota supplied SCCA with the 4A series engines in the "Toyota Atlantic" spec series engines in the 80's and they topped out at 225-250hp. These engines were noted as being quite reliable by the way.

Considering that they were assembled under the OEM clearances, which makes these engines so reliable, this appears to me to be the maximum you could expect out of an engine that would be reliable enough to be put on the street.

You might do some research into the "Atlantic" engines and use these baselines as a starting point for some engine designing/building

I'm very sure there are "Hot Dog" turbo heads that can tweek bigger HP but, as always, the higher the HP the less reliability you can expect.

Hope this bit of Toyota history will help you along.

As for the manual trans? When the Toyota engineers built the close ratio E-51 for the Supercharger engine system they installed a "in the case" oil pump which seems to lead me to believe they saw some problems with the reliability of the C-51/52 design don't you think?

I've seen the 4AGE/GZE make anywhere from 150whp to over 400whp on OEM internals. It all depends on who builds it, how it's built and how well it is tuned. I also know of at least 4 people that have 200+ whp MK1s running the NA tranny with no issues, one is a 300+whp car.

Should be noted the C series tranny Papo is talking about that holds 300+ whp is modified to hold those numbers. Not just a straight stock tranny.
