I recently bought another 86 mr2, n/a. I need to use the one i have up and running right now so i havent been able to pull the motor, but it needs it badly. I'm going through about a quart of oil a week and it's all smokin out the exhaust. I'd like to take the motor out of one of the cars which i just bought and have it rebuilt in order to have a turbo put on. it is a N/A motor, and yes i know your suppose to put a turbo on a 4agze, but i figure if i get the motor rebuilt in order to handle the turbo then it should work, right? I'd like to know where to start with getting to motor rebuilt, like where i should take it to have it done and what kinda compression ratios i should be looking for, as well as cam sizes, injectector sizes, the whole works, thanks guys.... also i didnt want the biggest turbo in the world but maybe a medium sized one which wont have toooo much lag, thanks again

Yowzers--cams, fuel, turbos, pistons; if you're starting that far back info-wise, and your situation is that urgent, you might consider purchasing a ZE.
Or maybe a MK1.5--> 3S-GTE swap? |

yea its alot of work, but i really wanna know where to start with the motor pulled, i have 2 4age motors and would like to rebuild one designed for a turbo... I've found it is very difficult to find a 4agze in newyork and im a little ify about buying it off ebay, a 3sgte swap seems very complicated and finding the motor would be most likely just as difficult, not to mention expensive.... Does anyone know if the 3sgte has a second set of intake valves which about like the 4age, because i reallly really like that about this motor, thanks

Alrighty, time for me to make a post on this
The 3sgte is a 16v twin-cam motor just like the 4a, and I believe the gen 1 and 2 used TVIS just like the 4a as well. Since you're interested in turboing a 4a, I'll cover that though. The first thing you'll want to do is determine what kind of block you have. There are differences between years, and their internals. Pretty much everything before 87 had 40mm rod journals, and 18mm pressed in wrist pins. The blocks were also the 5 rib (some call it 3 cause the other 2 ribs are hard to see - look under the intake side). 87 is a weird year that has a mix of things, so you'll have to measure. The 88+ had 42mm rod journals, and 20mm floating wrist pins, as well as 2 more ribs (7 total). The '90+ engines also came with oil squirters under the pistons, which is great for boosted applications. The GZE pistons, unless you want to order custom, are only available in a 20mm floating pin. The early GZEs used 8.0:1 compression forged pistons with a ceramic coated deck, wheras the NA used cast pistons. The late model GZEs (not available in USA without importing) are 8.9:1, hence why their horsepower is higher. What you use all depends on how much power you want to make. You can turbo on the stock casties, and even run with no engine management, but don't expect it to run for long. I'm just gonna write you out a parts list for a setup capable of around 200rwhp: +'87 7 rib block +'87 42mm crank GZE connecting rods w/ARP rod bolts pressed in Stock GZE pistons (available from Toyota for like $60 each) Stock GZE piston rings Clevite77 main/rod bearings, and thrust washers Either re-manufactured or new oil pump (Toga makes a high volume) Mazda RX-7 GXL fuel injectors (460cc) Megasquirt-n-Spark Extra using JamesL's writeup Garrett T3 Turbocharger .42/.48 AR (Saab 900 and 9000) Ford Thunderbird Intercooler OEM or Cometic Head Gasket ARP main and head studs if you want to spend the $$$ Stick with stock cams, and stock head, but make sure you have it surfaced before you build the engine. Nothing sucks more than putting a warped head on a fresh boosted motor. The injectors listed above are easy to get, and work pretty well. The turbo will have little lag, will avoid the loss of top end associated with a T-25, and is easier/cheaper than any T-28. Also, I use external oil filter assemblies to provide the filtered oil to my turbo, as its safer than tee-ing off the oil pressure sender. If you've never built a motor before, or don't have a lot of cash, it would be far easier to just buy and have a GZE shipped. You can get them from various companies, my favorite being Jarco Inc. (www.jarcoinc.com). Theres a lot of stuff I haven't mentioned here, including transmission, axles, fuel pump, exhaust, working with the stock efi system, etc., but it's something to get you started. |

try searching for JDM addictions on e-bay they are down here in my area and i have talked with them about buying a ze from them. they have three of them as of last week. they stand behind all of their stuff. I have heard nothing but good things about them. i could also swing by their shop and check out the motors for you if you'd like.

ok, so ive decided to just go buy a 4agze because it has a stronger block and would probably be less expensive, could u guys let me know what i could do to the motor when i get it before i drop it in in order to get the most horsepower, im eventually going to put on a turbo and some nice headers, but it would be helpful if u could let me know a good setup for each of these... also where i can find a 4agze besides ebay, i was wondering what toyota cars they come in besides the celica alltrac 4 or w/e, thanks -Vince

the best mod to get more HP from a 4agze is to buy yourself a larger crank pulley kit and install that. i run a 175mm crank pulley on my s/c auto and get a solid 14psi after 5000rpm (when i 1st punch it get ~12psi). the stock ex manifold flows prity good standard, but you can get a better exhaust system if you want, personly i wouldnt go over 2 1/4" diameter pipe though as mine was damn loud (was a 2 1/2" system).
when you go to turbo it, there is a few things you'll need from your 4age engine, so dont toss it. |
