SUBWOOFER PLACEMENT...NEED SOME OPINON'S

ok guys here it is, I have a 85 mk1 that im looking to put a 10in woofer in the rear trunk or in the front (under the hood) which one of the 2 would be the best location to put the subwoofer in that would give me the best sound. Im thinking the front because its closer to the cab of the car. I dont want to put it behind the seat because its to big to put behind the seat but it fits perfectly in the front removing the spare tire (dont mind losing spare) and in the back it fits like a glove as well but i think its to far from the cab. anyone have a subwoofer in any of these locations if you do please give me some info on what you have and what it sounds like. thanks guys

Honestly speaking I wouldn't recommend either. I would recommend porting the box to the cabin otherwise you're not going to hear much if you want to do it. Get something that will fit behind the seats, you'll be 500x better off.

i would buy another sub but the thing is i have a extra box with a 10in sub that i already have so i want to put it to use thats why im thinking of placing the sub in either of these locations... what im gonna do is a sound check tonight. im gonna run a speaker cable from the trunk of my other car to the mr2 just to get an idea what it would sound like if i actually wired it up. im gonna try both of the locations out..im just curious to see what its gonna sounds like

build a custom box that will hold a 10" and place it behind the passenger side i think it would sound much better than the other options. you could also go 8" if your worried about losing to much space.

not gonna build a custom box because the sub i already have is to big even if i do build a box ill have to have the seat all the way forward and im not gonna like driving like a granny...but like i said i have the box already and the sub i took it out of my lexus when i sold it and now i want to put it to use..but im gonna do a few sound checks first just by running a cable to the location using my other cars amp to power it...i will let you guys know how it sounds when i test it. it fits perfect in the front and the back but im leaning towards the front because its attached to the cab of the car

not planning on bashing you. but you have the right idea. for the ultimate sound quality experience the substage should come to the front of the car. all sound should. it wouldn't be as loud as in the cabin of the car. I have played around my my MR2, my truck, and a civic. so I have hear bass behind me (Civic), bass RIGHT behind me (S-10), and in the front (MR2) and the MR2 sets the sound stage VERY well. it wouldn't be as loud as the subs RIGHT behind the seats of your car, but then it ruins the bass experience.

you asked for an opinion which is what i was giving as for which one of the two locations would sound better i would say the front but i PERSONALLY don't like that set up. Clearly the box you had in you other car would never fit in the cabin of your MK1 but that doesn't mean that the sub in a box made to fit your car wouldn't sound and fit right. I have a 10" behind my passenger seat and it fits fine with plenty of leg room and the seat reclines pretty far back.

Ku-sama, would you mind posting some pics of what you set up in the front? I am also pondering sub placement

thats fine muffinman thanks for your opinion, but really the sub im using will not fit in the in the cab of the car. its to deep, i figure its 7 1/2 in depth sub alone then you have to add maybe a few more inches for the box and ill end up with my seat all the way to the front. currently i have the seat all the way back and thats the only way i feel comfortable driving my mr2 i dont want to drive my mr2 all un-comfortable thats the reason for picking the front of the car as my pick to put the sub in. i know everyone else has subs in the rear of there seats but im not trying to be different i just want to use what i have where ever i fits the best and will give me decent sound. but really muffinman i respect your opinion and everyone elses opinion i just wanted to see if anyone had this setup in there mr2 before i wire it all up and what it would sound like =)

If choosing the lessor of the two evils (Frunk or Trunk). The frunk has less mass to pass through to get to the cab. The trunk has an engine compartment with two firewalls meant to block sound in-between.

I'm also looking into putting in a sub, but I'm going to custom build a box that should fit behind the seats. Think I'm going to go with a high output 8" to save on space. Too bad I don't still have a decibel tester, love to test it. I'll take pics when I tackle it.

from my experience, the MR2 will hit a wall around 142DB. after that you'll need some really beefy crap to pull it off.

if you are looking for an excellent 8, get an Ascendant Audio Assassin go on Youtube and search for that in an S-10, it's my video.

the RLi can't get loud enough, but the DD can't produce the sound quality.

so again, I recommend the little AAA 8"

Good info, I'll look into them. I had my tacoma up to 157db, I have no desire to get near that loud any more. Just looking for good performance and a good boom here and there.

not bad, I had my S-10 up there with my old SPL setup:

buy yeah, try to find the older AAA 8's. they were a little more beefy

dude i have an 86 and i got two 10 inch kicker cvt's the like flat magnet ones. i have one behind my passenger seat and one in the front with the spare tire. it sounds hella tight. i had both in the cab but i was too close to the steering wheel, so i moved it to the front. at first i didnt' think it would sound good but i was very suprised. if you put both of them in there though it won't sound as good.

you should really do one up front ported and tuned to 30Hz with a sub that has a FS of about 32-34Hz. and the same sub sealed up on behind the passenger seat.
